pigeon controller
Friday saw us settiing out looking for bean or barley stubble, the first farm we came to had barley stubble and all the other fields around it ie the wheat and oats had been ploughed in so the field stuck out like a sore thumb. It had a few birds on it but we know the flightline to this field starts at approx 14.00 so we were confident it could produce. We popped to the farm to inform them of our intentionand they told us it was shot the day before but they packed up at 12.00 due to the rain. Decision time do we risk it ? . We decided to give it a go and drove down to the field and set up with twelve defrosted decoys with two on the magnet. It was now 11.30 and a few birds started to return and paid the price, we were helped by another shooter in the distance as when he shot two minutes later we had birds arriving. 14.00 arrived and the birds started in the regular flightline and it was great shooting. Disaster struck at approx 15.00 when the farm hand arrived at the field to turn the barley straw, so decoys in, 16.10 he finished after we had watched birds on the flightline pass wide due to the activity. We set up again and continued to shoot till 17.00 . We collected up and took the photo of one hundred and sixtynine birds and the dog found two others as we packed the rest of the kit up so the total was 171 picked up. Saturday saw us heading in a different direction still looking for bean or barley stubble we drove for at least an hour without seeing a bird in the sky . We came to a farm who will not allow shooting and it was heaving with birds coming from all directions as we watched the field a mountain biker crossed the field on the public foot path and all the birds lifted and went on to a farm we have permission on . So we decide to set up on the farms barley stubble which is so old the seeds have chitted and are four inches high. If we needed to, we would take it in turns to take the dog a walk across the other stubble field !! We set up and waited to see the reaction to the pattern they came close but would not come within approx sixty yards of the pattern which was frustrating as you were tempted to take the shot but would be throwing lead into the air for no result. We moved the magnet ,took it down and changed the pattern five or six times before they would commit . We did not have to take the dog for a walk as the wind was taking our sound to the other field and lifting the birds. I had a missfire when both barrels went together ,I hit the bird but had a sore cheek. I changed to my spare gun and had a few hurtful commets as i got use to it. You hear farmers talking about shooting and they say these scatter guns hit everthing in the sky and even uproot trees. They should try it one day. Distaster the farmer came on to the field with his sprayer to kill off the barley regrowth so decoys in ,spray decoys out .We stopped shooting at 18.00 and picked up one hundred and seven birds and again the dog found another after we had photographed the bag so the total for the day was 108 . JDog
Those farmers are so inconsiderate. Don't they know just how important pigeon shooting is? Good bags all the same. I was 'tractored off' twice yesterday and never set up at all. I am now seriously considering moving to 'South of Birmingham'. JDog
It's full of Pigeon Shooters!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes that would be a serious drawback. I think that I will stick to my pigeonless (at the moment) part of the Cotswolds. However I can't complain.
