pigeon controller
While sorting the wife's horse out today I walked down to the paddock and spooked about fifty pigeons from under the oaks. As I was poo picking there was a bang like a slab of concrete being dropped into a metal trailer. This caused about one hundred and fifty birds to fly over me. Both these farms do not allow shooting but it has made me think where I will be looking on Friday , weather permitting .

JDog
Found it thank you. This time of year seems to be that 'inbetween' time, that period after the majority of stubbles have gone and before they start on the winter rape. Further confusion is caused by the glut of acorns and beech mast. My next post will be entitled.......' North of Stow on the Wold' but there will be very little to report I suspect. Catamong
Yes plenty on acorns in this part but ive also seen about 150 on some rape today and yes they are eating it as there is a patch trimmed I predict it'll be well into 2014 before the birds start hitting the rape in any numbers in our area. This just shows how the birds feeding habits differ from area to area, there are literally tons of acorns and beech mast around this year, rape is not their food of choice, they'll only eat it when pretty much everything else has been eaten. yickdaz
had a few hrs out today for 10 birds on the same farm I shot 52 last weekend, its full of oak trees and a few oak woods theres about 200 resident birds flitting about from wood to wood tree to tree all the 10 I got had acorns in them, its the biggest concentration of birds i have seen for miles and miles so they are well and truly fixed on the acorns and beecmast around were I live lean times are just around the corner
Alpha Mule
You don't want to let the horses into a field full of acorns, they're poisonous to the them (I've been told).
matthewwhitbread333
Went out yesterday, set my decoys out as if they were feeding on the acorns only about 10-20 feet from my hide. Ended up with 7 pigeons and 3 jackdaws for 21 shots! : /
