hello guys

had a quick walk around permission this morning .Stopped for a wile in one corner were crows were doing real damage.

got 4 crows and 2 ferals in the end. Getting up on Monday with hide and decoys to get a few more.

problem is there are a few houses within the sight of this field and I found myself not taking shots wile pointing in there direction.

How far do I need to be from them so there is no risk of damage?

Thanks

Don't forget that a good tail wind will see your shot travel that bit further

Regards remmyman

And shot carried by strong wind alone can rattle on rooftops or windows. Regardless of the energy you commit the same offence and those it lands on are highly likely to be annoyed and feel under threat rightly or wrongly

I had the farmer have Shot land on his barn after shooting a good angle up from a few hundred yards away . He **** himself lol

I've also heard of people shorting each other at 100 yards mucking about . Please note I can't believe that someone would chance that

Me and a few pigeon shooting friends used to try now and again to rain shot on each other if we were having a bad day. There's no harm in that. I wouldn't shoot directly at someone though... I just don't think my brain could deal with pointing a shotgun at someone even if they were far away. I had enough trouble with an empty gun with the BASC coach! That just felt really odd!

I have spoke of this previous but one of my neighbours dropped a Lab at the sort of ranges people are talking of as safe DRT single BB in under the base of the scull, it was actively worrying his sheep and was a persistent offender and his intention was to scare it off. Single pellets can retain unusual levels of energy on occasions, don't take stupid pointless chances

Really! You activly went and tried to land shot on each other. great now i know the future of shooting sports are safe with people like you around.

i know you are messing about but even fallling shot can be a bit dodgy.

A friend of mine had to have some shot removed from his head after being rained on.

I posted a topic some time ago where my I was accused by a homeowner of dropping shot on him and his car... on his front drive. Where my shot had travelled in the region of 600-700 yds.

My advice, do not shoot toward them, it can spoil all your shooting, and they may be videoing you?

At a clay club I used to shoot at regularly the shot fallout from the skeet range lands on the sporting range with nearly every shot fired. The ground is still open and nobody has been hurt.

Can't believe I posted that either lister? Well someone should probably do something about me and this (large and successful) club I speak of before folk start getting killed... I can believe that a single BB or other large pellet could hurt or do serious damage, especially when fired in an arc rather than up with a fall back to earth with only gravity to propel it. But bird shot fired near enough straight up? I've had pellets hit me in the face at the clay club and it didn't hurt in the slightest. A piece of clay from an incoming breakage on the other hand can really sting or cut you. ****, perhaps we should stop randomly throwing those things around in case someone gets hurt? In fact **** it, I'm going to stay indoors for the rest of my life just in case I go out and get run over!

Just to make a point, and a rough calculation to back up my stupidity towards my friends, a #6 pellet falling at terminal velocity has approximately one tenth of the energy required to penetrate human skin. Even a direct hit to the eye is very unlikely to blind you. I won't say impossible because you never know, but it's right there with the risks that we take every day in the name of fun. I'd say there's more chance of me seriously hurting my friend by offering him a lift home and having an accident on the way.

Just because these antics involve a powerful firearm doesn't mean it's unreasonably dangerous. Hey, did I tell you about the time I shot an apple off of my mates head with my .243?......

Just kidding - that actually would be a very silly thing to do! :good:

Clearly i dont know anything! i bow out to you superior knowledge.

just keep shooting towards ya Friends

Merry chistmas.

i do hope any well organised clay ground would arrange them so you dont get rained on. Infact i cant think of a clay ground that ive ever been to this has happened.

clay shooting isnt randomly throwing things either.

like i say do what you like.

personally don't think its a good idea to shoot at anyone at any range be it in the air or not,, accidents happen,

but to admit it on an open forum is crazy,

don't think any FAO would agree with it being done either, this is when people get injured or fatally wounded clowning around with firearms just because your bored,

my advice is,,, if your bored then pack up and go home don't start mucking about with firearms trying to land shot on each other,

do what I say and you,ll live to shoot another day, do what you are doing and just one day you might not,

being a responsible person in charge of a firearm is a must, being irresponsible with one is asking for trouble

merry Christmas,,,if you live to see it

I can fully appreciate where some of you are coming from regarding talking about it and that's your opinion, which you are fully entitled to. But when you get to the facts pellets have next to no energy when free falling. Other members have said that it happens at their clubs too. If the shot was to ball and carry more energy so freely how come we risk launching nearly 2000ft-lbs of energy into the air so freely at clubs and in fields that are so close to dwellings or even towns/villages? If that really was an issue we wouldn't do what we do - there would be holes in roof tiles all over the country and clay clubs would have been shut down years ago. I wouldn't even consider doing it with heavy shot or a slug.

As has been shown on this forum many times in the past, what I do is questioned by many members here. Shooting squirrels and birds from the top of trees in valleys with my rifles, moles with my .338 and other heavy deer rifles... God knows what else. It's all safe. If it wasn't safe I wouldn't do it. It may not sound right until you think about it sensibly but all I care for is safety. I'm not all that bothered if what I do offends folk who don't know what they're talking about. My feo respects me and you'd be surprised at what gets talked about between us. I discussed the .338 on moles with her on renewal as we were on the land and the reply.... "it's a safe shot and your certificate conditions allow it. I can't see an issue with what you're doing although I think you're daft spending that much on killing a mole!".

I would love to hear a decent come back to this. So far kent is up there at the top with his BB's post, which I agree with. He's put a very valid point in here that doing this is only safe with small shot that's fired nearly straight up. It's a good addition to the topic from someone who knows what they're talking about and as such should be taken on board. All the others have simply suggested that folk don't like the sound of it. I haven't heard a decent safety related point from anyone.
