Suffering from the Wind

Friday was one of those days when it all seems to be going wrong, I started out in heavy rain to pick up DB and hit the school run . Why do they drive these large German cars at twenty miles an hour?Picked up DB and headed to the game cover maize we shot last week as we were aware that the rain was going to stop and be bright and sunny . As we approached the area we could see birds coming from all directions and we knew that we were in for a mega day . Last week the cover was standing but this week it had been cut down allowing us the display the decoys to their best. We left the magnet and set up our normal twelve thawed birds , eight on spikes and four as angels/ flyers coming from different directions . As we shot birds we put them on spikes till we had used the fifty in the tube. We then collected and put them in the back of the hide.We shot till 15.00 and started to collect up for the trophy shot. ROWLOCKS, I've left the camera in the garage and also my phone at the side of my bed as I use it as an alarm so we could not take the picture and would have to take it at home. During the day we had some frustrating shots due to the wind being very strong , you can see the effect on my face on the picture taken later. We ended the day with one hundred and fiftynine picked up. So it was a mega day and do not forget the camera next time.

Today the weather forcast was not good as we would have stronger winds and rain showers comming in from the south west. I'd received a text from a farmer saying that the birds were on his rape . Now this Farmer is hard work and will not let us shoot during the game season but when he asks you to turn up you have to be at his farm first thing as we obtained permission via another Farmer as he said the last shooter never turned up when he called. When we got to the field it had about seventy birds feeding on the rape and none joining , as we were committed to shoot we set up due to the bad weather comming in. Then the whole flock returned in one block so we waited and shot the tail enders, spooking the whole flock in the process. It was slow and we had set up the magnet as we knew that this farm is not pigeon shot very much, the wind was pushing the magnet all over the place and I was expecting it to give up anytime. We had para cord as guy ropes on all the hide poles and diagonally strung between the pole to keep the hide net from taking off.DBs cap kept blowing off and I offered him a couple of four inch nails but he declined. The shots were very difficult due to the fact the birds were lifting and falling in the wind . I had one bird which I missed above and then below, but we sussed it, we would let the birds pass out of the pattern and hit them side on . We packed up at 15.15 just as the rain was starting and picked up ninety four pigeons , so another great day North of the Cotswolds.

Very good, sir. That's a lot of trouble you've gone to, to take the first picture. Great stuff!

I am often asked why I take photographs and I remember two fishing friends , Mick Brown and John Watson , they used to say that if you take a picture it's there to remember the day . If you do not its a memory you can not share.

Thanks Daz, I'm sure there are other shooters who go out with the same results, it's just that I like to share not to gloat but to encourage others to go out and try. I think if you have a hunters instinct you will succeed in all country pursuits you just have to go out with a positive attitude.

I have Border Security posted to ensure that you do not get into the Cotswolds.

I have a secret tunnel shown to me by the Witch of Meon Hill before they hung her.

Superb again PC.

Isn't it good fun when the hides bellowed out like a spinaker, and you have to tie the poles down. Spending half the day trying to stop it all blowing away. But with all that, you've shot 159 birds. I've got to say, that is impressive. :good:

Thanks, it's all in the day of a Pigeon Controller.

I have to agree with yickdaz you and DB have got to be definitely in top 10 of pigeon shooters in England ! And I don't think you do it to gloat it just shows us all that it can be done if you know what your doing ! And where to look and most of all field craft ! So is DB camera shy lol ? Another thing how do you get all of these pigeons back to the motor with it being so muddy and carrying your gear also ???
