Hypothetical shotgun ban?

I was just thinking to myself today (not sure why) what would happen if the powers that be ever decided to ban shotguns in the same way handguns were banned a few years ago.

Obviously this would be terrible and there would be a massive up roar but what happens in terms of guns? I mean for instance whether you own a Baikal worth £200 or a Purdey worth 50k+, can they just make you give them up with no return? Is that what happened to hand gun owners?

I know this is a bit of an odd subject but thought it might make for an interesting discussion.

If this ever happens I doubt very much you would get the same level of compensation as the handgun boys did.as handguns were banned on a kneejerk reaction the final cost was very high.and there are far more shotguns in circulation and valued mostly a lot higher.if it happened I believe we would suffer financially.just my own opinion you understand.atb

Its good to hear that hand gun owners were compensated... whether it was fairly will be down to the individual case i guess. I assume there would have to be a similar system in place if it was ever to happen with shotguns.

Makes me slightly more comfortable when thinking about making a 'gun for life' type investment in the future.

Probably right but I was thinking (not the best course of action for me), would you be able to have it covered with insurance such as an extra option on your home insurance possibly. I don't really know enough about how these things work but I know my guns are on my insurance for damage etc. Like I say I don't have any knowledge of how it might work but it's worth a thought, hypothetically.

I doubt you would get insurance for it.i don't think it would be worth it.cant see it happening.buy the gun that makes you happy and enjoy your shooting.i very much doubt you will be buying your lifetime gun.most get the bug and go through loads.i have had around fifty over the years.still got some from thirty years ago but most are recent.mgood luck.

The handgun ban allegedly cost the tax payer £60 million in compensation alone, that was for 57,000 hand gunners. Considering there are 550,000+ shotgun certs on issue and as your average shotgun is more expensive that an average handgun, i seriously doubt any compensation would be paid out as the compensation bill could hit a 9, if not a 10 figure sum.

Ah yes, this was what I was kind of getting at, I wonder what the average number / value of shotguns held by each of these 550,000?
