First day on drillings.

I raced through what I had to do work wise today as I had seen some drilling going on last Saturday. Around here three days is about right for pigeons to find it in any numbers. It may be different elsewhere. When I arrived at the field there was a big red tractor in it pulling a set of rolls which I thought had scuppered my plans but he had just finished so I sat up and had a sandwich and a coffee and watched for half an hour. Birds did start to return and as there was only one obvious place for a hide I trundled across the field with poles, nets and bouncers, leaving behind the magnet. I am not sure that magnets add anything to decoying on drillings.

It was a lovely spring day and if I had shot nothing I would have enjoyed myself. As it happened a few pigeons and corvids did come back and I had a very nice session of less than two hours and I picked 30 pigeons, 1 Jackdaw, 4 Rooks and a Carrion Crow. There is something almost orgasmic about shooting Carrion Crows, knowing how many song birds are saved in doing so.

The picture shows a few decoys and my hide. There is a raised part to the hide to cut out the sun which I found invaluable. The pigeons came from the same direction as the sun and by the time they came into view and into the pattern they were in range.
