secret-squirrel
Hi lads I have the ranger 2005 /55 plate double cab as a lot of you all know . But it is terrible on fuel . Basically I need a daily driver 20 mile a day round trip . I originally wanted a 4x4 to put my trials bike in and for the dog, also to put shooting and fishing gear in the back This has now turned into a shooting truck and to go greenlaning in . The mpg I am getting is terrible So I think reluctantly I am going to have to sell it and get something different Cut a long story short I will have probably £4000-4500 to spend and I need a truck for all the above . Open to suggestions Hopefully a reply with the average mpg with each truck . Thanks people Edited April 22, 2014 by secret-squirrel
al4x
I get 28 to 30 from my 05 plate l200 on a mix of driving and even averaged 26 over the long weekend which included dragging a caravan to Suffolk and back. It's not the best but personally I find it quite reasonable with the mileage I do. Added that the truck cost me 6k 4 years and 55k miles ago and has been pretty reliable it's pretty cheap motoring 4x4 wise, Look at overall costs including depreciation while looking at everything
landy george
What ever you get it's not going to be much better. I drive a Honda Accord CTDI all week doing 45-50 mpg & weekends a Defender doing 25mpg. You're not going to get something that will do everything you want. If I wanted 45 mpg I would use my Mises Citroen 2.2 Hdi No issues. That's not what I'm asking tho . So you answer is 25mpg defender . Better than 17mpg ranger ?! So you answer is 25mpg defender . Better than 17mpg ranger ?! 17mpg? what are you doing to it. I had the same budget and last week bought a Kia Sorento 2.5 diesel auto. Only had it a week and so far been very impressed comfortable to drive to work in, towed the caravan a treat and off road they are meant to be pretty good. On my commute to work got around 26mpg and towing the caravan (1800kg twin axle) got just under 20mpg. I went for the Kia as loads of people recommended them and the online reviews are very good. Mine is 2003 with 60k on the clock full service history etc etc and is the XS model so got leather and a few toys and got it for a steal at 4k, the equivalent discovery td5 is minimum 6-7k and German stuff would be closer to the 10k mark with that sort of mileage. Its a lot of car for your money.
robbiep
I've known a few people with Ford Rangers, and there seems to be quite a bit of variation in the fuel economy that people do get. Most were getting 25-30 mpg, one was getting 18-20. It was only when we used his truck for a shoot day out that we realised why. Hard on the accelerator, hard on the brakes. In addition, he had silly fat-boy tyres, which also mean you use more fuel. I've got a 2.7d Terrano (SWB) which averages about 27-28 mpg. I've had Defenders (25-27 mpg), had a D40 Navara in the past too (30ish mpg). Basically, the bigger, heavier and more 'off-roady' the vehicle, the worse the economy gets. If you want to go greenlaning, then doing that will probably do 15 mpg at best, and quite possibly single figures. But don't expect a 'proper' 4x4 to do much more than 25 mpg, ever. They are expensive to run, end of story.

Proudly
Grand Vitara upto 2005 models, Peugeot HDI engine very reliable & cheap for parts. 35mpg round the doors & had 42mpg on a run. Best of both worlds as they are very capable offroad & still return decent fuel consumption. Loads of space with the rear seats dropped down but we manage a couple of dogs in the boot & all our decoying gear on the back seat

Piebob
My Ranger gets high 20s mpg. Why not just get your Ranger fixed? Thanks people Why not just get it fixed? My 07 Ranger makes 27-28mpg. You have a problem with yours I think, starting with the tracking. Misaligned tracking impacts fuel economy - sometimes surprisingly so, from what I've read. You could get that sorted cheaply enough, then see what your mpg is like after that? Twistedsanity
Without being rude if you like the ranger have you thought about adapting your driving style a little? I have a LWB shogun and adapting the way I drive it can make a 25% difference where mpg is concerned! low 20's if I just drive as normal and high 20's if I put a little thought into how I drive
birdsallpl
Unless your budget runs to something like a newish range rover. I would go for a defender for off-roading / shooting and one of those Eco friendly family jobs for work and social. The fuel mpg and low tax will subsidise the cost of the defender. Plus you don't have to worry about the wife complaining about the state of the car when she gets in it. That is only of course if she doesn't keep you company when out shooting. I drive like a nun hardly ever go over 2500 revs . And I dint have my foot to the floor up to those revs . I new I needed to get the tracking sorted but I am just about to (tonight) try and lift my front end with the t bars . If any one knows if this can be done . I know it can br done on a 02 I assume they are the same but when I had a quick look it under neath mine wile watching the YouTube video it looks slightly different . Any thoughts

davecooper1
I have an 05 Ranger, I live in Euxton Lancashire and I travel to my syndicate shoot in North Wales, takes just over an hour to get there, same coming back, I put £25 diesil in the tank, and it covers me easy, I have never checked the milage, but mine dont seem to bad on diesil, its split 3 ways with me and my 2 brothers on most shoot days, so works out fairly cheap, your not going to get high mpg out of any 2.5 makes of truck.
