diddy
I have plenty of rape fields near me but they are all very high so I cant shoot over them when does rape normally get cut? I know last year was late but the rape seems to have grown a lot quicker this year.

lakeside1000
30 years ago when I used to shoot over rape it was September, they used to sow in November and the young plants would just get their heads up by Christmas, just when the pigeons would be looking for some nice new shoots, they used to clear acres in no time, now they sow much earlier and its a foot high by new year, so too tough for the birds to eat, although it doesn't stop them having a good go, its only early may and the rape flowers are well developed, they will be going to seed in the next few weeks so just depends on the weather, if it stays warm and dry the seed could be ready late June or early July, pretty much the same time as the barley , my favourite crop, once the barley seed has hit the ground the pigeons come in like kamikaze pilots, great days, sun on your back, pigeons floating in ,bags increasing, long afternoons, it just doesn't get any better. JDog
21st of July is the earliest I have known rape to be swathed (rather than cut and harvested).
The Essex Hunter
Spoke to a farm foreman local to me and his recons mid June, the flower is dropping off and the pods are formed. Not sure what the predicted long hot spell will do to those dates. One thing what I can never get my head around is spring rape!!! I am watching 60 acres and it is just poking through where the stuff close to me is nearly 4 feet tall... TEH

TEH I would have thought mid June is a bit early, today is the first wet day were had hear for ages and the flower is still on so it will take a few weeks yet until it will be ready normally they start cutting ours around the forth week in July, by then the winter barley had been cut, peas taken up unless they go to seed and then the rape and wheat depending on what is ready first. alastair0903
How early , it is now normal to be drilling it in the second week of august ? The main reason being so it gets a good start before the pigeons find it
chrispti
Direct drilled in the same week the wheat was cut. Edited May 11, 2014 by chrispti
