Little_Dom
I was talking to somebody i know who was told during their shotgun interview that the police are looking at implementing a limit on the amount of shotguns you can own based on an amount they deem suitable for you to own ( sounds a bit like what you need for a fac where u need a purpose for having each gun ) has anybody else heard of something like this or it it just another force making the rules up as they go along (northumbria)
Duckman91
I think it's made up pal as when applying for mine my feo (n.yorks) said I could have as many as my cabinet would hold( 5 ) and if I wanted more I could simply buy another cabinet. In England you can own shotguns simply because you want too ie for collection ect but in Northern Ireland where I'm from originally you must justify each gun. Hope this helps
robbiep
The only current restrictions are that you must have suitable security for the shotguns that you own. The police CAN insist on additional security (monitored alarm, etc) for a large number of guns, or even if you have one or 2, if you live in a high crime area. I believe this 'all shotguns to be justified' has come out of Scotland, I'd imagine it's politically motivated rather than police motivated. steve_b_wales
Heard nonsense like it it is nonsense and should be treated as such.... +1. Also, just because a gun cabinet is deemed to hold 5 guns, that does'nt mean to say that you cannot put more inside it. Until I purchased extra cabinets, for my benefit not the police, I used to put more than the stated cabinet's capacity in them.
welshwizard
My FEO always asks why I have so many guns and what do I use them for (on every renewal) since the criteria changed in the 80,s ? they also insisted on extra p.i.r. for alarm system in room they are stored in , on last two renewals he also stated my gun safe needed updating (which I did) in my force area they also ask each time where they are used - permission address . ok before anyone says this is NOT in the requirements for shotguns I know and have friends in other force area,s and know they are not asked for these , I have had shotguns in this force area since the 60,s and they have always gone a little bit further but since the change in gun laws they put their own twist on the requirements for ownership of firearms . Berettacocker
A friend of mine has 7 different calibres of rifle, and each time he applies for a variation the local firearms liaison officer asks why does he need all these calibres he just says "because I want it" and always gets he's way! What I'm saying is if you want another gun and your security is ok, you have the legal right to do so
robbiep
A friend of mine has 7 different calibres of rifle, and each time he applies for a variation the local firearms liaison officer asks why does he need all these calibres he just says "because I want it" and always gets he's way! What I'm saying is if you want another gun and your security is ok, you have the legal right to do so I very much imagine your friend is pulling your leg about this. For rifles, you have to show 'good reason' to own each and every gun. You do not have the legal right to say 'Oh, I fancy a .308', and get the variation. kent
There is no limit but their are advisory notes on security that can be applied. A nutter can only fire one at a time so any move this way can only be about theft, 12 guns in 12 hands can do more damage and we should all consider that fact when reviewing our security. HDAV
You do not have the legal right to say 'Oh, I fancy a .308', and get the variation. If you say " I fancy entering a .308 competition at my club" you do......
bi9johnny
i had a level 3 security check last year and my total sec1/sgc is 45 and its the size of your cabinets that deem the amount here......as steve said because i had big 10+ cabs he doubled it as i said i can top n tail to suit
Berettacocker
You're right Robbie but good reason to own 1 no x .243 308.300 win mag would be say deer stalking. What I meant on my last post was liaison officer would ask why have 300win mag when you already have .308 and my friend would say he just wanted one. I've seen my mates rifles .22 _.17_.222_.22/250_.243_.308 and .300 win mag. I know this sounds excessive ( I shoot .22lr and .243 for everything ). But some people just love guns! Other forum members must have various different calibres on their ticket?
thepasty
My FEO said I can have as many as I like but go above 10 and the house needs to be alarmed.
Thunderbird
IIRC I heard once that Avon & Somerset had a "rule" about a house having to be alarmed once you hit (again, IIRC), five pieces.

flynny
We all know that different forces have different interpretations on HO guidelines (it's shocking some of the stories that we here ,whether they be true or false) The only restrictions I have on the number of guns that I can own is as follows, 1) The wife 2) Bank balance, Atb Flynny
