The forbidden land.

I have written in the past of a piece of land extending to over 1,000 acres that I have never been able to get on as 'a man from the village shoots it'. That is always fair enough and I have enough land not to need to tread on anyone elses toes. Two days ago that changed and I was invited by the farm manager to shoot some late peas which were being attacked by pigeons. He did not need to tell me this as I had already spied the grey hordes going into one of the five fields of peas on that ground.

My permission was for one day only on one particular field and that was fine by me. It could lead to other opportunities.

Today was the day and having worked in the morning I got there at 2pm to see two lines into the field from opposite directions. Neither group of birds mixed with the other so it was one flight line or the other. The heat and the sun were major factors and I just had to get along a high hedge for cover and shade otherwise I would have burnt up. A position was chosen and I waited a full twenty minutes before the first birds returned. Like last week on spring rape the flight line changed and a lot of birds coming from the side went behind me only to reappear opposite the magnet. I had to be absolutely ready to get a shot at these birds and that required a lot of concentration and the release of a fair amount of adrenalin.

I shot for three hours and I had 52 on the clicker when I packed up and I picked exactly that number without the aid of a dog as the peas were short. Within fifteen minutes of leaving the field the pigeons were in the cooler of the pub nearby. I exchanged the whole lot for two dinners.

That sounds like a good afternoon and a good deal on the meals. :good:

Its a good tip for members trying to get shooting, to approach Farmers regarding specific fields (when they are being hit) and ask for a short period permission.

The practice of getting permission for short periods on specific fields, is another way to get shooting when Farmers are not keen to commit.

It can also serve as a "probationary period".

Last winter I shot on three fields of rape on a farm I couldn't get "full time" permission on, it was just the three fields until the end of February.

I will see what winter drillings they have and be back knocking this winter.

Result , a good days sport and a free tucker in the pub afterwards,

That's exactly what it's all about, I do the same in my local.i give the land lord various game throughout the year and am rewarded with a few proper ales and a meal every now and then, I gave him a nice venison shoulder last month and the ale is free tomorrow night for the England game
