This afternoon on stubble

I thought my chance of getting shooting this week was poor but luckily they cut a field out the back of my house yesterday.

This is not just any field but my favourite of all those on my permissions , the reason being it is home to a large sycamore tree that the pigeon just seem to adore , the amount of pigeon I have shot while sat under it over the last 15 years must run into the 1000s and I am always confident of a few shots when I go down there.

Yesterday evening i could see a few milling about so I decide to go down this afternoon .

I got down just after lunch and was disappointed that only about half a dozen got out of the tree , as there is often a large amount in it .

There was nothing much moving about but having shot it many times before I know that mid to late afternoon is the prime time , so undeterred I set up anyway.

I put a pattern of 20 sock covered full body decoys out , with the magnet about 25 yards out from the hide and a few yards ahead of the pattern , I completed things with a floater about 20 yards behind the pattern on the far side.

An hour later I was thinking I may have made a mistake , I only had 4 or 5 and a couple of ferals , but things slowly improved without ever getting too hectic and after a while I though I may get 20 or so , they decoyed well when they came and today was one of those days when they all wanted to land on top of the magnet , it was really pulling them, helped by the fact that there were plenty of young birds about which always seem suckers for it.

George of proper cartridges had kindly given me some samples to try , some high speed and some proper pigeon , I started with the high speed and to be honest I did not like them , they killed well enough but the recoil was not to my liking even through my auto and I missed a few I would normally get as I think I was flinching between shots. ( I did say I would give my honest opinion )

A change to his proper pigeon 30 gram 6.5 s and I liked them much better , much less recoil and still killed very well indeed including one or two really long birds , I would certainly recommend the proper pigeon to anyone who gets the chance to use them.

Anyway things improved somewhat and the score started to tick over nicely and I was just starting to clear up in the hide with view to packing up with 47 on the clicker when I spotted some heading into the decoys and I was very pleased to shoot a triple , its not often I manage it but low and behold within a couple of minutes I had repeated the feat and still I was not done I finished the day with a third triple on the bounce although the last one did include a feral

Never managed 3 in a day before so was well chuffed !

So I finished with 55 and 8 ferals and my favourite field had come up trumps again.

Also I get pinkfeet out there during the autumn on occasion.

I could never do that. Good shooting and exceptional hand to eye coordination.

Its really just making the best of a good situation , I am sure on the odd occasion you have shot a pair and thought " if I had another shot I would have had that one too "

It is unusual to shoot three on the trot though.

A nice outing. If I wasn't working I would have joined you. There's always another time, I suppose.

I am sure there will be Motty .

I would not be surprised if the same field does not offer another chance , I will be off work next Saturday so will look out for something for then

glad you had a good day it wasn't long ago you was sounding a bit fed up with the lack of birds keep it up

before you know it the cod will be in and a good day on the beach will be on the cards

colin

Yes you right Colin .

I came very close to packing it in , fortunately a few people on here talked me out of it and I have had a reasonable spring / summer on the pigeon without it being spectacular , it does seem that most people have struggled a bit this year though.

Hopefully there will be some cod turn up this year , last year was dire and the summer has been hugely disappointing too , give it a couple more months and there is bound to be a shed load of whiting about though , I am sure we will get that session together at some stage this autumn / Winter
