Paul in North Lincs.
Said goodbye to Grandad this morning as he left for greener pastures in his sleep after a short 12 month battle with Senile Dimensure. He was a great man........................................One of the best anyway........ He spent most of his life working dogs, shooting, fishing and ferreting, and its fair to say that it was from him that I derived my life long interest in the great outdoors. We used to talk for hours, and as a young boy would listen with such intent at his tales about shooting, poaching, fishing, birds...his days in Egypt in the army etc....he was a well loved character, a loveable rogue with the charm of a Prince. I'll always remember we used to go down the the local gravel pit when I was a kid setting traps for field voles, tadpoling, bird nesting, ......sneaking about in the small oak woods with his old bsa cadet shooting the odd squirrel and rabbit..........these are the fondest memories of my childhood. Growing up, my mates would be out playing footy, or down at the youth centre...whilst I'd be out with grandad ferreting or pigeon shooting...much to the bemusment of Dad who was rather jelous of the fact all I wanted to do was to go out with him.........and not go down to the 'Polish Club for a shandy packet of crisps and a game of darts with dads boozing pals...... ..................he bought me my first gun, a BSA Scorpion pistiol, Gave me my first fishing rod an old Avon float rod and intrepid delux reel.....when I got my shotgun cert he gifted me his Webly & Scott single barrel shottie along with beautiful old Laurona SS both of which I still have....... When he got to older, he was happy to come along and quietly watch me fish, and shoot; remarking occasionally "good shot lad........nearly as good as me in me prime".....then he'd go onto tell me the same story of how whilst on a shoot in Scotland he dropped a left n right partridge.....reloaded and did the same again in about 10 seconds!!!.....I must have heard that tale a thousand times.......but never got fed up of it....................., we'd laugh and joke, smoke and end up in The Crown for pint of Mansfield Bitter......after which came the mandatory '40 winks' with the snooker on TV before tea.................happy days they were................he was my grandad and my best pal. ..................One day we'll walk down to Ashby Ville again, and poach a rabbit or two off that miserable old ****** Marshall, and relax with a can of Stones Ale at the old barn in the Top Field next to Emanuels beck....... Hope the air is fresh..the skies are blue, and the fields are green where ever you are mate. So long for now Ralph William Slowen...................R.I.P old lad

Lord Geordie
Sorry for your Loss! They never really die they live on in memories and often something triggers those memories and you remember great times spent with the great people and it brings a huge smile to your face and the odd chuckle. My grandparents died over 15 years ago and even Making my Grans favourite Brownie recipies brings back fond memories and it's like the is right there telling me i have put too much flour in I hope the pain is quick to ease and the memories overpower the loss LG
