Because it was all part of "selection".Making them eat way out of date American scoff is all part and parcel of getting that beret. Swapped a load for MREs with the yanks during the Gulf and they seemed way better but in reality it probably only seemed better because it was a change.They had peanut butter in theirs and that was a treat.
