Sporter on DTL??

Only ever shot sporting so far but trying DTL Wednesday, fancy a change.

I use a Beretta Prevail 3 (28") normally, seen that everyone recommends 30" or 32" and a trap gun rather than a sporter. Question is if I use my sporter will it be unsuitable and end up putting me off doing it again if I get a rubbish score? I'm a big believer in the right tool for the job and I think I can borrow a 32" trap gun but not a fan of borrowing other people's guns (bad luck dictates they go wrong!). How much will it benefit me?

It just means if your gun shoots flat . Your have to block your targets . Thats all .

Its not the end of the world .

I, and plenty of my friends shoot DTL every week using sporters, a couple of them straighten it on a good day. If you want to take it up seriously then investing in a trap gun may be worth it but no reason not to shoot it with a sporter.

Do trap guns generally shoot high then? Or is that why they have the higher ribs?

Yup.

You might want to choke up a bit 1/2 generally works well, a trap gun was worth about 5 points a round to me after i changed (not big deal) if its your first time try loading just one cart once your hitting 22+ then load 2 otherwise your just wasting lead

Using a sporter for trap is not a good idea you have to block the target out to hit it ,you will nearly always slip over the top of some clays .By using a trap gun you can see the target all the time .

I will take anyone on using a sporter ,I will use my trap gun let's see who wins 100 birds

I don`t entirely agree. Don`t most sporters shoot the majority of the pattern above the POA? I know mine does. I don`t believe I block out the clay when I shoot DTL, at least that`s not the sight picture I get.

Not going to take you up on your offer though because I`m not a great DTL shooter. One of the guys I shoot with might though. He uses a trap gun but I`m pretty sure he`d give you a run for your money with the sporter of his choice.

Give Sage 100 a shout if he's still about suspect he'd happily take you up if he has time, he prefers OT though.

If you're going to stick with trap then it's worth it. If you buy 1 try as May as possible & make sure it fits you as near/good as possible and get it fitted sooner rather than later - Borrow your mates & have a go but be prepared to miss over the top of a few ;)

Knew a guy down on the Humber in the 80's who occasionally shot DTL with a skeet gun .That's a 1980's skeet gun with 26" barrels and very little choke .He had to get on them quickly but it proves that it can be done .Depends on how serious you want to take it .

Well that's made my decision simple?!?!?!?!

Think I'm gonna try the sporter but not get annoyed if I miss plenty, then try again another day with his trap gun if I haven't got one by then and see how it goes! Can always sell a gun on if I don't use it!!!

You can NEVER have too many guns!!!

this thread takes me back to when I was a child and used to go watch my granddad shoot.he only shot dtl and was a member of the irish national team.he used the same gun as he used around the farm and had a room full of trophies.i can remember him when in his late seventies shooting many 100 straights.its the man pointing the gun that counts there are many excellent shots in this country but I do believe that a lot of old skills have been lost over the years.i only wish I could have shot dtl as well as he did.but even with all of today's innovations in guns I cant compare to his scores.so I would have to disagree with deershooter and say that if you came up against the right man with whatever gun he would wipe the floor with you.
