JDog
How are they on juice jdog? Not particularly good. However maintenance and repair costs have been negligible. Edited August 8, 2015 by JDog
Twistedsanity
They are typical Japanese cars, they go on forever but when they do eventually go wrong it'll cost a good few quid to sort out
lurchers
All the chavs have them for smashing through gates and turning the fields up for there bullxs.if this helps but I would rather go for a RAV4 or a Freelander for the job you want. southeastpete
V fast if you get the turbo but not great on fuel
kent
Diesels break their cranks lpg melt their valves. The engine likes high octane and my petrol has done 170k with only breaks one back box and lots of suspension bushes bought new on s 53 plate. Forester turbo, won't buy another because they are too dear by far on parts and drink petrol eat tyres. Might cry when I sell it though, seats haven't even dropped Got written off last Christmas for s broken rear screen plastic trim and s tiny bit of metal damage you won't believe the price of those bits a few thousand! Bought s whole tailgate in same colour second hand 400 fitted it and re- mot it and took a 2k cheque off the insurer of the person who baked their landrover into it
southeastpete
I really miss mine :( very useable 4x4 that just goes so hard when you put your foot down
V8 90
Thanks for the info so far - I'm looking at 2010/11 diesels around £10k-£13k with low mileage
figgy
Think the crankshaft trouble was sorted by then. Great car on and off road, the off-road capabilities have to be seen to be believed. I have a 05 xt and it's been great had new front pads and both rear wheel bearings cam belt and service. Now on 103 thou. Still drives like a new car. Only thing I can moan about for me is the transmission whine. Running costs are no dearer than my old RAV4 or any other 4x4 I've had. gazbev
I've got a 2010 diesel and it's a great car, very solidly built, the only thing I can say is the clutch is heavy and gearbox is notchy, there were some crank problems with the very first diesels built (09) I bought it for the Mrs three years ago when we had some snow to get the kids to school and she loves it, we looked at the Rav4 (ridiculous gate type rear door) the xtrail (reliability issues with gearboxes and small boot) i am buying her a Yeti 4x4 next year, Ive got a chance to buy a friends company car for a good price so I am keeping the forester for myself, it had been battered by her and the kids and other people but I can't part with it,it's a perfect shooting car with intermediate tyres, off road or on snow it will bowl you over how good it is, space for a medium dog cage in the back with the seats up, heated leather seats too, go Jap ask any mechanic. kent
Diesels break their cranks end of and can happen in or out of warranty at almost any milage Info from one of the biggest scooby breakers in the UK
Brodie
I've got a 2013 diesel and, as it should be, it's been faultless. I like the permanent 4wd - the only downside, maybe, being no low range but it does all I want and returns 45-50mpg. If I stick around 60mph on a run I get nearer 60mpg. Don't know about parts prices but £300+ for a service at a main dealers and independents seem to quote nearly as much. Recently heard of a late diesel which broke a valve head off - new engine under warranty.
PERCE
I've got a 13 plate diesel, it's averaged just under 44mpg over 20k miles, it gets a lot of short runs & I don't tend to hang about. It would get much better mpg if driven steadily, 50+ not out of the question. I've had no issues with it other than a bit tinny & the stereo isn't that good. Much nicer to drive than the CRV I had on lease a few years ago. I picked up all last season with it & didn't get stuck.
theshootist
I have a soft spot for them. I have had a 2005 XT since early 2008. This has done everything for me and the constant AWD system has saved my skin many times. Like all turbo subarus they can be made into a real performance cars if you want. Don't expect low maintenance or low fuel costs though, power comes with its price. I now have a forester sti from Japan, which is less of an all rounder and more of a road car.
