Dunkield
Sorry to derail (nice pig btw) and drip on about it but this came up recently, not on here, someone was quoting "the law" in Croatia, which just doesn't exist. Of course the correct calibre and bullet construction the best tools to use but that doesn't mean you can't use your stalking rifle if you are sensible and that is all you have. Rim Fire
No worries mate I have learned something new and think there should be a section on this type of thing. Personally I wouldn't shoot a boar with a 243 i wouldn't be comfortable doing it that's why I have the 308 for it and only ever shot two and they didn't argue at all with the boiler room shots but I am a novice. Thanks i have again put in for a 308 on my renewell which is up on the 17th of this mounth but as yet havent heard anything yet

fortune
Quite confusing for some people trying to differentiate between the law, which is a legal requirement and a guidance or suggestion. Yes. I've got a 270 but I know a bloke that has taken a load with a hornet. He learnt his lesson when he dropped one on a track and went back up to the farm to get a Sambron to lift it out but when he got back piggy had recovered and wandered off with a big head ache. After that incident he nips over quick and cuts the throat to bleed them out and he got a 308. I always find it strange when people jump up and down and want to make more regulations and dot and cross everything and get some authority involved at every level and as for suggesting basc get involved all that would end up with is another money making scheme for them and another hoop for us to jump through. The big old boys can be a bit strong on the taste side. The smaller young boar are better and it keeps the family group in a better dynamic than shooting the alpha and then the whole lot go into split up mode. The only trouble about head shooting them is that if the shot is off the jaw can be shot out and the poor animal dies a bad one. Shot placement and a bullet gun combo is the way to go along with knowing the animal in the area.

Dirty Harry
A mate of mine was shooting them quite happily with a .243 until the firearms department screwed him over and took "any other legal quarry" off his .243. He had to get a bigger gun to comply with his ticket.
Dougy
I think that for driven you definitely need as big as possible. But stalking it's a different game all together, you have time for proper shot placement.
Scully
I'll bet they taste wonderful. I'm reading a book leant by a friend which he brought back from N. Zealand, about a bloke and his mates who hunt them on foot with dogs, and kill them by grabbing a back leg and sticking them under the front leg. They then carry them out on their backs, like rucksacks. Interesting stuff for those who're into it.

He got a 22-250 and it has resulted in way more wounded, missed and educated fox than old Bertha ever did. A blade of grass and none explosive velocity and bullets never bothered Bertha! Should of kept his mouth shut!

Do be giving lots of reasons why you do need a larger bullet. Foliage is causing problem for the bullet and you are fearful of wounding. You wish to use a slower and heavier bullet to overcome grasses and such a little better. Scully, I have done this. I went out with a group of Maoris who told me what to expect. WelshMike
Well done Rimfire, nicely done. Better a nicely placed .243 100 grain then a poorly placed .308 165 grain IMO. Keep up the good work.

Like you say, apparently the dogs are all manner of breeds and crosses, but they know their stuff and each wear collars and are tracked by the owners while on the scent. He said it is common in Dunedin to see 4x4's with hogs strapped to the roof or bonnet going through town. Can you imagine the outcry if that were to happen in the UK?
