My trip to Norfolk went well and after having booked into my riverside B and B I went for a stroll along the river Yare. Never have I seen so many Widgeon, teal and assorted Geese. The Widgeon were so close to my bedroom that the blinking things kept me awake at night with their whistling. That and the smoke alarm which kept beeping to signal a low battery. Jasper and I were out early this morning as it was so light, along the riverside path we went past the sugar beet factory and on to a ferry man's cottage.

Today was the day of the big fire up and I arrived at Ditchman's house in eager anticipation. There are quite a few PW members following this thread so I hope that my report and pictures do the operation justice. Please excuse any lack of knowledge and technical terms on my part.

I had to be briefed about every part of the engine in front of me as I didn't want to get anything wrong. The initial fire up did not go well as the battery was too small and it soon drained. Once Ditchy had taken a larger battery out of the Landrover the engine turned over a couple of times and then fired up, belching smoke out of the iron 'exhaust' and the join between the turbo and the pipe. The smoke was not black and acrid but light blue and once the throttle was opened the smoke cleared somewhat. However Ditchy was not happy fearing that years of inactivity had rendered the fuel pump inefficient. The engine itself appeared to purr over just fine, at least to my untrained eyes and ears.

The engine ran for five minutes or so taking fuel from an old milk bottle hanging from the shed ceiling. Naturally there was no water pump attached to the engine and when the block started to heat up it was turned off. The room soon cleared of the fog and Ditchy declared himself well satisfied with the outcome after months of hard work. His intention is to take the fuel pump off and send it away to be refurbished (apparently there are more parts to that single fuel pump than there are in the rest of the engine).

Ditchy is a very modest man about his knowledge of such matters and it was a great pleasure for me to meet him.

Very nice report and photos Mr JDog , I saw the smoke from Ditchmans area in Yarmouth , wasn't sure weather it was his engine or the beets factory chimney making all that pollution

Them ole Widgeon ( local name is Smee ) look a bit on the wild side , the ones we go after look a lot calmer than the ones in your photo Mr Jdog :good:

Did you take the photo on the Buckenham marshes ?

Thanks for that ditchman , or ditchy as some of your followers call you , joking aside its been a superb thread and even me who never knew a thing about diesel engines , well any engines come to that , have followed it the odd time when you first started then the more I got into it, the more time I spent in looking to see what was going to happen next .

Now you are getting close to completion , I now know I would never, and I repeat NEVER attempt anything similar to what you have just done although. I have at least learnt what happens to the diesel once I have put the fuel in and put the cap back on the tank , so thanks for that and good luck on your next consignment .

Well thank you ...all you boys and gals................as i said to JDog ive got to send the injector pump off to be re-built...that was why it was smoking badly when reving down..guvnors at fault /sticking..........usually a stuffed turbo does the same...but i held a piece of white paper under the turbo and reved up and down and not a spot of oil on it

also as i fine honed the bores to fit each piston...there is barely no crankcase pressure....you can hold a lighted match above the oil breather hole in the rocker box ...and it wont blow it out !!

will update when i get the pump back

once again thanks to all of you...for the "fun and abuse" that was thrown around.....i dont get out that much when its cold so you people are my only connection with the outside world

cheers again...(until i think up some other daft scheme)

Pic 4 is a cracking pic, it shows a determined man. I think that captures the essence very well indeed.

I am waiting for PART 2, getting the engine in! :good:

you will have to wait a while then as the other one is ok...just at the moment...when it does go in i will run another thread as there will be other things to do on the landrover ..like changing it into a full soft top and galvanising the tub funiture...fitting tailgate.........but that is a while ahead yet

cheers

he showed me all around the pump and said the pump was in good condition but the settings had been changed so the cold start wouldnt engage...then went thro the guvns' pressure valves and god knows what........he is going to re-build it with new pump vanes gaskets seals ..set and test pressures and metering for £323.00...............on the floor were rebuilt pumps for the local BMW and Merc dealers...all beautifully finished off....will pick it up next week sometime

Ditchy, don't know if you remember but on the old two and a quarter the timing marks were "approximate", 99 times out of a 100 once started you had to tweak the timing a touch. That would give the white smoke :good:

Just thought I'd jog the memory a bit
