ehb102
I shoot Comp X 21g. The cartridge is better than me so I don't feel obliged to shoot something heavier or more expensive. Any 21g cartridge will be okay, although I don't like Fiocchi and you get more duds with Eley IME.
ehb102
RC are nice and soft. I like their 24g I think it was 2s. Edited February 14, 2016 by ehb102
fortune
+ X for comp X 21 It wont be so much a problem with the cartridges it will be their upper body strength to be able to get the gun up into pocket without leaning back to hold the piece up. And the over helpfulness of the guys to over help out. Women are better taught without men being there. once they've got the set up correct. knocked a few down they are good. I've got 4 daughters and some good women friends who are good shots. PS look at women shooting on you tube and the stupid guys putting the women into silly unthought situations to see what I mean. pontbeck
My experience is that the issue with a lady having her first shot is as much about the weight of the gun , as the strength of the cartridge .
BlaserF3
It's not just the weight most novices tend to lean backwards too, some type of recoil protection is a good idea. Coniston use a Past recoil pad which fits on top of clothing with 21gm loads and a light short barreled 12 bore.
kent
My daughter shoots 21 grm but has shot 28 grm through an auto She kicks some butt with it but don't complain from the butt kicking her Auto mate way to go never mind the shell so much
pontbeck
When I'm coaching a novice lady the first thing they usually say is the gun is much heavier than I thought it would be.

In that case he should be able to provide the cartridges the guns and the expertise to these lucky ladies and ensure they enjoy a great experience. Let us know how they get on. Harry136
So we have summed up the 3 biggest challenges to women shooting clay pigeon 1. recoil 2. weight of gun 3. leaning back
bakerboy
So we have summed up the 3 biggest challenges to women shooting clay pigeon 1. recoil 2. weight of gun 3. leaning back A 21g cartridge will break any target offered to a Novice and most other targets as well. They are generally soft on the shoulder. Recoil, a heavy gun will reduce recoil, but a shoulder pad is probably a better option. Leaning back will tend to suggest a heavy gun, a gun that does not fit, or tired arms during the lesson. There are numerous other problems that can come along, but if as you say (E27N_JD) your mate is a coach they should be covered.
Glenlivet
So we have summed up the 3 biggest challenges to women shooting clay pigeon 1. recoil 2. weight of gun 3. leaning back 4. Large breasts apparently!! Although these could counter problem 3.

welshwarrior
So we have summed up the 3 biggest challenges to women shooting clay pigeon 1. recoil 2. weight of gun 3. leaning back 1 I've found most women are not overly recoil sensitive. 2 & 3 are linked a gun that's to heavy encourages anyone to lean back. Gun fit is the biggest issue to many ladies try men's guns and funnily enough they are wrong for the lady, to long to low in the comb (increasingfelt recoil)

buze
thanks to everyone for the advice. i will grab a slab of 24gr comp x cartridges and invest in a shoulder pad for them. i will let you know how they get on Careful with the shoulder pads -- my wife bough one, somehow supposed to be recommended etc, and it's completely useless. Typically that sort of things: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Past-Ladies-Field-Shield-Recoil-Shoulder-Pad-Shotgun-Clay-Pigeon-Game-Shooting-/301134693685sold under different brands. She has now ordered one of these instead http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171988564680 -- it's really only to protect when she hasn't mounted the gun exactly as it should. One thing she does use and is very happy with on her 20g is that: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00LJ5PDMA?keywords=neoprene%20stock%20shotgun&qid=1455555632&ref_=sr_1_10&sr=8-10-- that has enough shims to raise the comb just what she wanted, without being bulky or damage the stock... It was a bit finicky to get it on first, but it's actually quite easy to tweak once it's on.
