Bring back national service........migrants?......what migrants, they've all gone home.

^^^ This ^^^. All male migrants do at least 3 years on minimum wage, and they serve wherever they're sent, or go home. No benefits for dependants until 3 years is up and they have full time employment.

Does that apply to brain surgeons?

Not what you'd class as a migrant in this context are they really, but even if you did the forces need surgeons at times. By bringing conscription back it would at least prove some form of loyalty to the country you want to reside in and take care of you.

If you are in the 50-70 y.o. age group and whinging about this country, perhaps you are part of the problem?

Really? I think from memory our problem has been with the self seeking, vacuous Politicians we have had from all parties over the last 50 years has been the problem?

Once voted in they destroy any little benefit we have derived from the previous mob and embark on mindless routines of their own while burying their snouts ever deeper in the trough?

Yep we should have the same system as Australia, we choose who we let in. :good:

I agree. There will never be a time like we had. No world wars. Jobs and security, relative affluence and liberalised attitudes. It's all going downhill now.

this is my fear , i worry for my children , the country is falling apart.

Iam very glad to be in my fifty's with no kids. Because the next generation is going to face major problems. I seriously think we have had the best years.

The reason people find it so hard to be happy is that they always see the past better than it was, the present worse than it is, and the future less resolved than it will be. Marcel Pagnol

The UK does choose who to let in. Other than EU nationals that is. Being part of the EU means that any EU national or someone who has been granted citizenship of an EU country, plus Swiss, Norwegians and soon Turks, can travel and reside within the EU. THAT is the problem. Along with the separate issue of the European Court of Human Rights which basically is a money-go-round for lawyers fighting and stalling any plans to deport foreign criminals and terrorists.

So basically the UK can choose who it lets in except the whole damned world.

What a strange comment!

I am retired and during my 50 years continuous working life contributed my fair share of tax to the running of the NHS, defence budget and looking after those more unfortunate than myself.

Whilst having a degree of sympathy towards migrants from war-torn parts of this world, I am afraid I have very little for economic migrants (or whatever you want to call them). There is no room, and no spare cash to look after them.

My son has worked in Canada for the past two years, and had to undergo a rigorous vetting to ensure that there were no native Canadians capable of doing his job. As others have said, we should have the same system here. If convicted of any serious offence any migrant should be booted back to where they have come from. Benefits should be earned, and not treated as a right.

I am fiercely defensive of the benefits of living in this country that we have earned through 'blood sweat and tears', and I suppose that I am indeed part of your problem. Unfortunately for yourself I do think that there are perhaps many like myself......

My son is married to an American. She cant stay here without a visa and she is on her third at about £800 a go. At the next renewal she can get permanent residence but I think she has to pay around £1200. If you follow the system living here seems a lot more difficult than arriving by boat.

I see Austria is rebuilding its Border post with Italy ....I don't think this was reported by the BBC.

It is reported in the Telegraph that the EU are going to fine member countries (€250,000 per rejected refugee) millions of Euro/pounds for refusing to take in refugees!

Bring it on! They will push Belgium France and Holland into exit referendums as quick as blink.

So they are going to ignore the Dublin Regualtion? OK We will charge them £4,500,000 per refugee they make us take for breaking that legally binding agreement then!

Iceland manage their politicians and bankers when they are doing that, did we?

I apologize for asking such a personal question but would you mind telling us how you voted in the Scottish referendum?

No
