Trevorevans
I once owned a car but at the time my mother was using it for work 5 days a week and I would use it on a Sunday and sometimes as little as every other Sunday so my mother insured the car as the main user. 2yrs or so later I rang querying the renewal cost to be informed that my mother could not insure the car anyway as it wasn't in her name so I/we had effectively been running about with no insurance. I argued that she was the main user of the car, something they themselves had asked, so surely she was the biggest 'risk' on the policy but they wouldn't have any of it. Asked them to just swap the policy over to my name to be told no problem sir, then the quote increased by nearly £300, I asked them to justify the increase as my mother remaind the main user but they just said that's the way it was. I wound up changing the name on the log book, utterly mad.

rbrowning2
If my memory is correct, the issue with insuring a vehicle that does not belong to you was not to do with the insurance companies but the government to fix some scam with uninsured persons driving the vehicle not sure exactly how the scam worked but it was also about the time SORN was introduced. My wife's insurance would not even let me pay the monthly instalments from my bank account as it was not in joint names had to be paid from her account as she is vehicle owner, yet we are both named on the policy with her as main driver. Glenlivet
10 year policy on the Jimmy?? Expires 16/10/26?? I'd have told them to **** off and certainly wouldn't have paid them. Total ********.
rbrowning2
Should have told them you had changed your mind and was keeping the car and just let it expire on the 16th October. £40 to push a couple of keys on a keyboard is day light robbery. fortune
This insurance lark is a real con. the government should standardise all insurance polices so that they're all the same how can you compare feathers to coal. none of the policies are the the same any which way. You basically just pay your money and hold your hand out and hope for the best
cuffy
The government tell you you must be insured , same as you must be tested and taxed . The prices for test and tax are fixed by them . So why don't they fix the insurance prices ? Or would that stop all there chums from fleecing all legal drivers .
Davyo
Wonder what the insurance companies would do if the government decided to put it on fuel. They do in some country,so you pay for what you drive, plus you can never be hit by an uninsured driver. This will prob never happen because some government minister has his/her sticky fingers in the insurance pie. Glenlivet
The Aussie system works. Your 'rego' is mot, road tax and third party insurance for any driver. One stop shop, job done ✅

norfolk dumpling
The trouble is you are dealing with call centre staff who do not have a clue re insurance law and principles. You can insure a car you do not own - you have to have a financial interest in the car and that can simply be ensuring if you have a crash the owner (eg wife) is compensated and more importantly if someone is injured they are compensated. Ownership issues also arise when you get a perk car from your employers but they insist you insure the car - the owners interest would then be noted should you write it off. Also for many of us we have driving other cars cover so even if we have sold our car we may be driving our wife's car under the doc extension. As a former underwriter (40yrs with Norwich Union as was) I frequently have interesting conversations with call centre staff and more recently carsales staff who try to sell me superfluous insurance products! I recommend any of you who have anything out of the ordinary you go to one of the specialists in car mags ie Footman James, Adrian Flux etc etc. trying to get sense out of a bank or supermarket on insurance topics is nigh impossible. Don't forget PPI!
