Adge Cutler
11 finals in his last 12 tournaments, 7 wins with another chance tomorrow, Wimbledon title, Olympic title. cracking stuff Quite.. Perhaps the greatest British Sportsman of the Modern era ? I don't know if any of you have ever been fortunate enough as I have, to go to Wimbledon, Queens or Paris or witness a major Tennis championship but these guys( and Girls ) sacrifise so much and are the fittest of the fit. His parents and his Brother must be absolutely thrilled. Genuinely glad if he has got to number one, saw the BBC article this morning when he was at No 2. Some might say by default as his next opponent, Raonic, has had to withdraw through injury . But hey all's fair in love and war !

Gordon R
Perhaps the greatest British Sportsman of the Modern era ? He isn't fit to lace George Digweed's boots. Andy might make the top 20.
chrisjpainter
Genuinely glad if he has got to number one, saw the BBC article this morning when he was at No 2. He's Number 1 elect. Officially he's Number 2 still, but the new rankings come out on Monday, by which time Murray will be ahead. Djokovic is due to lose a whole whack of points (2000 or so). Murray loses only 800. So, given that he's now reached the final in Paris, he'll have accrued so many more points than Djokovic in the latter part of this year that he'll sneak above him - by even more if he can beat John Isner tomorrow. chrisjpainter
Thank you for the explanation, as said earlier I am genuinely happy for him. +1 The boy's done us proud. Your ranking points are determined by your best 18 results inside the rolling year. Each ranking release, players lose the points from they'd got from anything outside that 365 day period. Murray's form has just been astonishing since Wimbledon - and was pretty tidy before that, so he's just hoovered up the ranking points! So much to like about it - he's just put so much work in. He's got talent, of course, but his work ethic is extraordinary Edited November 5, 2016 by chrisjpainter
Gordon R
I have to admit he has put in the hard work. At one time, he looked to be not putting in the effort - not now. If he wins another 10 majors, he might live up to Adge's rating.

moose man
I'm pleased he's made the no1 spot on paper , but he needs to be beating Djokovic on court to be the real deal ..
Gordon R
Adge - they might have heard of Lewis Hamilton, Carl Froch, Anthony Joshua, Steve Redgrave, Lennox Lewis, Nick Faldo, Mathew Pinsent, Chris Hoy, Bradley Wiggins, Tony McCoy, Phil Taylor, Ben Ainsley and Stephen Hendry to name a few who rank more highly than Andy Murray. Perhaps, but in all of those sports, Britain's had a strong modern historical background. Boxing, cycling, rowing sailing etc. are sports we expect to do well in. Until Murray came on the scene when was the last truly world beating tennis player we've had? Virginia Wade won Wimbledon in '77, Sue Barker won the French in '76. That's 30+ years of abject mediocrity and 'Come on Tim!' But, in an era playing along side the two greatest players of all time in Federer and Djokovic, Murray's won Wimbledon twice, the U.S. open, man-handled Team GB to a first ever Davis Cup win and won two Olympic Golds - something which no other man has ever done. Gordon R
chrisjpainter - I agree about his achievements, but the comparison for Andy Murray is almost non-existent. As you point out, we haven't had a decent tennis player in the last 50 years. I haven't judged the list above against fellow Brits, but against the best in the World. That is where his achievements should be measured. Perhaps in ten years, he might have lived up to Adge's billing, but he has a long way to go. I applaud his success.
