Malinois
I was in a gold shop a while back, one where the gypsies tend to go and buy their stuff. I commented on how little they had in stock compared to previous years. Their answer was that there was no money in trading gold anymore and that the smart money goes into diamonds over 1 carat and high value watches like Rolex. walshie
my philosophy is only buy something that when you sell it you make a profit. what ever it is, that way you never loose money only make money. i have recently bought a couple of watches one was a garrard 18 ct automatic watch for 200 pounds. if you a going to spend thousands of pounds on a stainless steel watch you might aswell buy a fake and spend the difference on an old english sidelock .thats only my personnel opinion. Assuming you want to walk around with a snide watch on your wrist. Why not just buy a casio?
Nick_MSM
I've got quite a few 'nice' watches, including Rolexes. I couldn't care less what others think - I bought them because I like them, and I intend to hand them all down to the kids eventually. The face some may climb in value is an added bonus. It's all horses for courses. Getting back to the original question, as has already been said, TZ is an excellent forum for learning about watches. Also good for buying/selling but you have to earn your right through certain number of posts etc. I'd steer clear of certain auction sites etc unless you really know what you're looking at. Walshie, I sort of get the sentiment, but not all investment watches are loud. I have several that I've bought to hand down, nothing like what some people have on here, but beautiful regardless and not at all brash. I must admit I like nice things, so I spend on clothes, shoes etc, I just feel better wearing and owning quality things, this extends to all parts of my life. Paddy Galore!
and those fake watch sites.... asking for trouble in my opinion. I almost got to the point of giving over the card details then thought better of it. sadly i'll never be in that league so i'll just make do with a cheap by comparison tag heur. If I can't have the real thing, i'd rather not have it at all. My point was with the previous poster who said why not buy a fake instead. Because it's fake, that's why. I'd rather have a cheap real watch then a cheap one pretending to be something it isn't.

Ian A week before Xmas I was listening to a radio interview with a high end jeweler and she was saying that quality cut diamonds are now being purchased by the public for investment. Big clear stones with the correct certification and upwards of £10k. Only buy from a reputable source.

I can understand wealthy Greeks or Arabs who worry about sovereign risk, but U.K. Residents? Why bother? Buy Gilts or farmland instead. Stamps are also a very portable asset, as long as you stick to the well-known ones that are relatively easy to sell.

There are a few fascinating papers around that explain that the value is completely manufactured by DeBeers (monopolist trust) as in fact diamonds are neither rare, nor expensive. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rohin-dhar/diamonds-are-bull****_b_3708562.html https://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/diamond-de-beers-marketing-campaign You can also now buy synthetic diamonds which have better color and purity for a fraction of the price of a natural one... Hamster
I have both, the watches have mediocre (in reality) monetary values, the plates are priceless.

Anyone I know with brand new cars prefers the normal numbers plate, because then everyone knows they're brand new. Lol.

Hi Chris, I've had just picked up a 25.31 Seamaster after being sent off for service and polish. Was just wondering the difference, that's very helpful if true could you direct me to where you found it?
chrisv
Hi Lloyd Try the page below. http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Omega/Seamaster/Watches It's a bit of a pain, because you have to select each watch in turn and go to the specs page. Lloyd90
I actually googled Omega Seamaster 25.31 and 25.41 and Omegas own site has some info with the tech info and mechanism. As you stated the 31 is the automatic and the 41 is the Quartz. Googling this I managed to find this pic online showing the difference. Very big difference. I have just picked up a 25.31. It's the Omega 1120 movement. Very nice piece of craftsmanship.
