Its a Petzle shunt, I use this when climbing alone. I climb buildings, trees, rocks.. you name it B)

Pretty handy device, along with the classic figour of eight for abseiling.

Those photos are actually from two nights ago at Harrisons Rocks, Groombridge. I have climb nearly ever climb there now :D

Did a 5 week training course there some years ago, I know take people out and teach them rope safety, nots, basic equipment and methods. Really nice place to spend a day or two.

Its a one way brake system, that locks under load. Have climbed dome pretty high stuff solo with it.

my flatmate is big into climbing, was involved in mountain rescue a while back.

It scares the **** out of girls he pulls though as the first thing they see in his room are ropes, harneness and buckles hanging down from the book shelf!!! :)

That heli bit appeals to the "freedom" thing in me in a dangerous sort of way.

I'd be particulary chuffed to be on a heli's outrigger like that. I'd say the guy used the carbon fibre rod to partially equalise the voltage between the cables and the heli before connecting the "ground" cables to prevent any major current spikes that could ignite fuel vapour.

Would also need to ease the volts off again as the heli moves off.

I could be weading that wong though :stupid:

Dave, Helis create a LOT of static electricity, my geuss is he has to loose this from the heli before boarding and departing from the heli. Usually when the heli touches down the static is lost that way. Emergancy rescues require that the rescue line touches the ground before picking someone up.

The rotors friction between air and dust in the air generates the static buildup.

One other thing, those heli pilots are AMAZING look how still they hold them.
