TR1
HELP anybody into air quality. We are having a problem with an irritant in our kitchen / family room area. It feels like a mild burning sensation to our eyes and nose and has been present for the last 2 weeks We thought at first it was bleach smell but having cleaned all the walls , floors , curtains etc and even bathed the dogs the problem still exists. When you enter the room the irritation can be felt almost immediately. Running an air purifier has little effect. The flooring is tiled throughout. Any suggestions appreciated. TR1
There is no undue smell in the utility , we can shut the door to that area and it makes no difference.

TR1
Thanks for the inputs , keep them coming . I will give environmental health a call tomorrow , I guess they are attached to local council. Will keep checking all areas suggested. House built in 1982 , we have been here 24 years. Oven and hob are electric , other than that normal fridges and freezers. TaxiDriver
Washing machine , Build of dirt around the seal on the door ? Or partially blocked outlet hose (particularly if teed in the sink outlet as dirty water/fat can flow back into washing machine outlet pipe) Edited May 1, 2017 by TaxiDriver

If it possible to isolate the different areas to localise the problem, Start by shutting doors and open Windows for 10 minutes. Then shut the windows. Then see if it is in one room more than the other. sometimes this can be caused by a leaking pipe very slightly almost like a fine mist. Stuff like plaster and MDF kitchen units soak up the water and go rot causing various mould growths which may not be visible. It might not be apparent until you get under base units that you have a fair ole crop of mushrooms growing under there but you have to isolate the problem areas. TR1
We have tried to work around the effected area to find the worst part but it is open plan 40+ m2. Tomorrow I will take out all furniture etc and see if it makes any difference.
silver pigeon69
Any chance one of the dogs is peeing somewhere that your not noticeing?
paul1966
i would of thought that if is a type of gas from underground more than one room would be effected, could it be a component overheating and giving off fumes in a domestic appliance, we had a mains filter overheating in our dishwasher that gradually melted until it started tripping the fuse box. TR1
Our tiled floors are cleaned every day , no sign of dog pee. Not sure how too test appliances other than turning them off . Washing machine in utility room and isolated.
paul1966
all we did was switch off and unplug each appliance until we found the problem, obviously the fridge freezer has to be left on but could you move them if needed.
old'un
My first thought was the same as ditchman (chlorine) as the op said the smell was like bleach, don't suppose you have any un-open/broken bleach bottles in the cupboard?
webber
Check your light fittings. I had a similar issue in a bedroom a few years ago. The smell was acrid, it transpired to be the lamp holder over heating and basically cooking. webber
ips
Yes good point Webber, I had a smell of something resembling a dead fish it turned out to be bad wiring in a ceiling lamp
