I picked up DB at 08.00 in the rain and we set out with not much confidence of having a dry day. We had seen birds last week on a field of rape and as we arrived they were still in the trees and on the rape. So we had a " driving expirence " to get to chosen tree to shoot from. We erected the brolly to protect us fron whatever the gods decided to throw at us and put out the decoys on the rape, The decoys were not the best as they were from last week and refrozen and decidedly tatty , ten on frames and two on the magnet. To placate the farmer and not to upset his paying customers he requested we shoot away from the horses, this meant that the wind was in our face and the birds came to us from behind. I have no problem with this but DB hates it as he can not get on the birds quick enough. During the day we had all the elements mentioned in the title and at one point a total " white out" during which three birds came over high and just circled unable to decide what to do. We shot till 15.30 and managed twenty four birds. We did not take a photograph as I did not what to upset Motty with my miserable face. When we returned to the disco it was 2 degrees.

Don’t do that type of weather anymore, so well done for going out in that weather and shooting a few, not much better today, not stopped snowing/raining all day.

The birds have not shown in any numbers this year around the Midlands, last year there were some pretty big flocks around some of the rape fields, don’t think we will see them this winter now (but you never know with pigeons) so looking forward to some on the spring stuff.
