fiiish1987
Gents, I'm off to Chesil 10am tomorrow for my first mackerel of the year. I can already tast baked stuffed mackerel (drool). Has anyone been recently? any idea on numbers so far? Hopefully going to get a decent haul for a BBQ in the next week or so...
fiiish1987
Great Stuff. Managed to bag 40 in an hour and a half! they were just throwing themselves at us today!!! Unfortunatly the end eye broke off my rod but after a trim down to the next eye I carried on like it hadn't happened. However it's about time I retire that old relic and get another as it's now 11 years since i bought it (and that was second hand).
Cranfield
Well done on the mackerel, get the barbecue going and eat them fresh, deeeeeeeeeeelicious. :good: There are a few coming into the boats up the Kent end of the Channel, but not a lot showing on the beaches yet. We haven't had the right weather and winds yet, but it should start any time now. Incidentally, the top eye is the one that always goes on beachcaster (I don't know why), most shops have spares that you can fit on with a bit of superglue, much better then throwing the rod away. Dirty Harry
I was at Chesil a month ago. Two old boys were fishing for mackrel. One cast in and the end of his rod went with it I did chuckle. I showed my little boy the catch and got talking to the chaps. They ended up gutting 6 and giving me them. How nice was that? Harry
MC
I fish chesil at the ferrybridge end about 2-3 times a year and love the mackerel sport. You always get people ask if you can catch them some for the barbie and I always try to oblige. One year several years ago my Dad and I caught 70 stone in 3 hours on a charter boat out of Keyhaven in hampshire and they ended up being distributed among the local longliners. We didn't buy any beer or fish for a long time.
Lancs Lad
We always make a trip out on the boats when we go down to corwall..............leave from padstow harbour for a couple of hours bashing. Me and the skippers mate ususaly gut everyone elses out for them on the way back in...........And I then charm the more squeemish of tourists into my "feed the seagul" rountine with the guts and heads...... Then its off to perranporth beach.............pick up a lobster and some crevettes from the fish market on the harbour.....Into tesco for some dill and lemon........ Then its time to show the tourists what you eat....get the bbq out....crack open lobster into the dill and lemon butter......fish on the bbq.......crevettes on skewers................ Couple of bottles of the rose stuff................job done... Watch the sun go down...................keep warm around the bbq................ Meanwhile all other toursits are sat there with their chips and pasties.....................ahhhhhhh.....only 7 days away. ANyone know if this rain is going to ****** off......................otherwise its 2 weeks in a tent..............rain.............eating pasties.. fiiish1987
Cheers for the tip on the tip cranfield. I'm still going to replace the rod with a new one as it performs quite nicely as it is (just a bit less whip in it). I'm not throwing it away but I'll use it for jollies down to the stone pier for upsetting the tourists with their tellies! Out of interest though, what else is about this time of year on shingle storm beaches (I.E. Chesil). I've got the bug now but I've never realy fished for anything else off there (which is a shame). Could I get some suggestions on rigs and baits corrisponding to fish species? Alot of the websites are'nt very good at saying whats good for what species. Cheers P.S. I had to get some on a bbq asap and they went down well stuffed with lemon!

Piebob
Is that the case for all fish? What happens if I was to catch a salmon or sea trout? I've moved house and the beach is under 10mins walk away. It gets netted for salmon and sea trout mainly. I was having a chat with the netsman but I forgot to ask what the legality was for beach fishing. Presumably his company have the rights to net that bit of shoreline? I've only ever been river or boat fishing, but the beach is now so close that it seems daft that I don't have a go. Meantime - sailing from Arbroath at 8am on Saturday and heading out to Bell Rock. Hopefully, we'll have some fun and a few things to barbie come tea-time Piebob
henry d
Do you need a licence to fish off a beach? No, just remember to only leave footprints behind you Is that the case for all fish? What happens if I was to catch a salmon or sea trout? No you need a permission to fish for migratory salmonids, so you`d have to put it back. Suffolk shooter
Fantastic wonder if SS has been out in the boat at North Norfolk yet think he had a few last year, still waiting on my invite Which SS Pavman?? I was down in Dorset last week courtesy of MC, and whilst I couldn't get the rods in the car owing to all the kids stuff and the wifes clothes (It would have been easier to have put the house on wheels), I did call into Purbeck angling in Wareham and bought a nice cheap rod and reel and went feathering off the beach at Abbotsbury. The reason I chose there was I had visited there a couple of days previously with my eldest girl and she wanted to see the only guy fishing. Got talking to him and he'd had a few mackerel, "said don't get many of these off of Suffolk", turns out he was also on holiday and came from Suffolk. Kessingland up near you Pavman. Shooting the breeze with him and I mentioned that in the Sea fishing mags they had been talking about an increase of bream off the coast, when his rod went round and he pulled one up of about 2lb. Anyway, went back a couple of days later and thanks to the recent heavy rain and wind that we had had, struggled to get any further than 50yds out, although about 200yds of line went out with the wind and ended with nothing. Daughter wasn't disappointed though as she got to cast for the first time (None actually made it off the beach she is only 7), and she collected some nice rocks, shells. garyb
I've just picked up a new rod & reel combo for this summer. Saves kicking the $@*# out of my old Carp rod again I do love getting out on the Mackerel... Roll on September
Spaniel
Hi You do normally have to cast some distance to catch them at Abbotsbury, but nothing beats fishing on the shore with the sea haze coming at you......... Same goes for fishing off dartmouth Beach, lovely place but again you need a bit of distance casting. If you want some nice close in Fishing get yourself down to Berry head Brixham.Just watch what you are doing... I always use Artifical shrimps, 6 on a trace, quiet small ones and they always work for me. If you get bored catching the Mackeral at Berry Head take your Carp rod down and using Rag Worm just drop you line over the edge of the rocks...and hold on tight...you will catch some lovely Wrasse, but there are some Big Ones down there and they have Teeth...... Last time we went down there we watched this puffin bobbing up and down in the water, then there was one almighty splash and a seal appeared, Little Puffin was no more But watch the kids at Berry Head its deap water.... have fun, hopefully i might get myself down at dartmouth in the next few weeks, Baby allowing me todo this!! Our eastern European friends are starting to **** me off catching tons of mackrel, black bags full. Wont spend the mony on food any chance at a free meal . Big gangs of them leaving beer cans and cigg boxes behind them. They have quickly found all the best spots and are exploiting them.
