Made a couple of these a few years back for my father in law & his brother. I was asked recently if I could make a pair as gifts for their sons. I went for a common design shape and got some unsharpened Wrights if Sheffield blade blade blanks. Plan was to use some bog oak, nickel silver, leather spacers and a bit of faux ivory with a few sterling silver pin beads and mosaic pins.

Started out with the nickel silver fittings..

More sanding and shaping followed, then installed mosaic pins and sterling silver bead pins. Next was to make sheaths which were made from veg tanned leather. I tooled these and used an antique stain finish and stitched them together after fitting neodymium magnets to aid blade retention.

Absolutely stunning workmanship. Thanks for posting.

There is clearly some outstanding talent on this forum.

My only comment would be that now they are finished, that patio could do with a bit of weeding :yahoo:

😁 Too busy making things, far more entertaining than weeding.

Good reply.

Cannot argue at all with that. Far more satisfying and useful.

Wonderful craftsmanship.

Stunning!!! They put mine to shame!!

Not at all.....you pulled out all the stops making your own blades! I've made a few of my own blades in the past and I know what graft goes into that alone👍......

mainly why I  took the easy (read lazy) route on the blades😁

Wow.

I take it you don’t do this as any sort of business, but just as a gift to friends? Very impressive.

Nope, not a business interest, though I have done a couple of bits for other folk in the past, mainly leatherwork but it is just a hobby I enjoyed for sometime. Very satisfying realising the end result and the uniqueness of one off handmade pieces......though the route is occasionally littered with mess ups and frustration👍
