Barbel baits

Hi,

My local river is hammered with pellets, boilies, luncheon meat and the like by 'specialist barbel anglers'. What baits would you guys reccomend for legering for the barbel which they are less likely to be shy of. I'm thinking along the lines of a nice juicy earthworm. :)

Anyone have any ideas? Also the type of rig you would suggest fishing it on.

The best bait I have ever used for barbel is white maggots.

Feeder fishing with the largest feeder you can buy (I made one out of a small washing up liquid bottle) and get as many maggots into the swim as possible.

I use to take along 6-8 pints of maggots a session.

Alternatively, pepperami is very good.

my friend and i stood fishing for pike one evening and where distracted by comotion

in the shallows up stream when we crept over it was some pretty special barbel

fighting over the black berry's as they fell into the water dunno if this is common

but we were spinning so were un able to have a bash

might be worth a go ?

I swear by Edam cheese for barbel, in a nice big chunk (think of a large dice, or a cylinder shape if you want it to roll around) on a size 6, with a single maggot to secure it. Watch out for chub though as they will have it if they are about. As far as rigs are concerned, I like to go as simple as possible, so a straight running ledger is what I go for, or a rolling lead if you want to run the bait through the swim.

If your river is large like the Seven or Trent then use the biggest feeder your rod will cast fill it with hemp and casters and have about 5 - 6 ft leader to a size 14 hook with double caster as hook bait.

Before you tie on your hook just fill the feeder and keep casting out and leaving till empty then bring back in and repeat the process for up to 15 min , this enables you to get plenty of bait down and also the sound of the feeder hiting the water will help to attract fish.

In my match fishing days i had plenty of results with this method.

Good Luck

hi ferret master,

this used to be one of my more time consuming hobbies before i started shooting,

I have fished the ouse, the severn, the trent, the dee and the avon all just for Barble,

I have caught quite a few barble out of the Dove which hold a few quite big fish for the size of river, my best to date ore 11 1/4 and 10 1/2 both from the same peg at Tutbury withinin 1/2 an hour of each other,( i have been smashed more times than i care to mention by bigger fish) but most have been under 10lb with an average of about 8lb. I have found that its not the bait, but the time that you are actually fishing that counts.

You may find that if you fish late evening when its going dark and allot later you may find that the fish will move into there regular feeding spots , and with more confidence.

But i must stress that its not a safe time to go without an adult, i dont mean to sound rude to you in anyway but its certianly not the safest place to be in the dark on your own.

I have always used luncheon meat but added what i used to keep under my hat as it was one of those things, you used to catch but other people used to blank and used to always ask what bait i used.

simple i fried it in olive oil and Marmite, i must say before you try it "it really stinks" all pre baited a day if not more with hemp, i useed gallons of it, but only abou 1/2 gallon in the swim (get it in bulk from pet shop supplyers in a 12.5 kilo sack doesnt matter if you over cook it, this stinks also)

dont rush the fish laev you bait in for as long as poss let the fish gain confidence and just be prepared for the bite,

best of luck. and be prepared they fight bloody well specialy in flood and strong flow.

i will pm you a web page for you to have a look at when i get back to work. it will give you more ideas

all the best

dougy
