steve_b_wales
As I have quit SKY for their TV, phone and broadband, I am looking at getting a Humax recorder box. The reason being is that although I can still use my SKY+ box to watch most channels, I can't record them unless I pay a monthly subscription. Can channels like ITV, BBC 1 / 2 etc be watched on one of these boxes? Also, what is a good one to look out for (or not!) budget around £200 -250) Edited December 1, 2020 by steve_b_wales

steve_b_wales
I've heard good reports regarding Humax and will be looking at getting one in the New Year. Thanks for all replies.
johnphilip
Steve there are 4K Freesat boxes with record in your price range , if you get your interenet speed up you can get some 4k programs on Netflix . The app for Netflix would be available on a freesat box . Something to think about for the future .

I'm hoping my internet speed will increase quite a bit more soon (once I get the superfast broadband activated at the end of this month) At the moment, it's approx 19mbps which may not be a lot to some, but far better than a few days ago. Thanks.

It looks okay to me. https://www.t3.com/reviews/humax-aura-4k-review-a-compelling-reason-to-upgrade-your-freeview-box

Here is something I have just got . I know your head must be aching . Have you seen all the adverts on TV for " DISCOVERY + , or DISCOVERY plus " well i used to love the discovery channel it was all I watched on sky . Well I have found there is an App you can download to your phone or tablet . You can get all them channels it costs a fiver a month . Or special offer of 30 quid for a year . You stream it through your Internet. Ideal if you have unlimited data . I am loving it only had it a few days watching " gold rush White Water " they are mad 😀
RockySpears
Maybe older Humax models were good, but mine have been really poor. Got one last year, for Xmas. 1) Constant hard drive noise, the machine just keeps running the hard drive more or less non-stop. 2) Volume kept increasing all by itself after 3 months. Got replacement unit from Humax. 3) Hard drive still noisy, constantly. Read many such complaints online. 4) Volume started increasing all by itself once more. 5) Now part of a pile of electric appliances that "work", but are horrible. 6) Recording system is awful, if you want to record films you have to trawl through umpteen channels and skip through every few hours to find them. 7) Films are almost always recorded in "bits" no idea why, you miss a minute or 2 of every film. Just my thoughts, RS
oscarsdad
I had a humax freesat HDR box for quite a while as I put up a satellite dish due to free view signal being rubbish. It was great and never put a foot wrong. In fact, it is in the loft unused now as no need for freesat now I have moved so would happily sell it - it isn’t 4K and doesn’t have smart features though. steve_b_wales
Another one I'm thinking of is the Humax FVP-5000T @ £189.99 (Argos/Currys) If purchased at Argos I can get 12 months free credit.

Thats a free view box not freesat . How good is your TV aerial to use a free view box . ??

Deker
Check facebook marketplace and eBay for bargains, I paid £18 for my HDD Humax and around £15 each for the bedroom ones, they also have the Netflix app built in which is all I use them for these days. Cosmicblue
Are your really living somewhere where that internet service is so poor that you can't stream iPlayer or the other 'catch up' TV services via a Smart TV? We haven't owned a TV recorder for 6 or 7 years..

ph5172
I have always used humax. Due to licence issues they lost 4 catchup and its Associated run offs. I have noticed it can be a bit slow to respond and you can hear the HDD especially if it’s recording at night. i use the catchup players the most but it is lacking some of the more popular players such as prime and Disney. The wife uses the series record and it does occasionally clip the beginning or the end. if you don’t need the record function I would recommend a non record or non smart humax with an amazon or roku stick to allow use of the catch up. We have had a Humax foxsat receiver for ages and it does make a tiny noise when it starts up, my daughter has a newer version (last year) and I can't hear it. Regarding recording we went for 2 sets of twin cable, one supplies the TV down stairs and the other for upstairs, however we had to have a quad LNB which is the bulbous bit at the end of the dish arm. This gives lots of options for recording and watching.
amateur
Blimey, it used to be so much easier when all you had to worry about was whether or not you had a long enough tape in the video recorder and if you had set it up
