Well I didn't price itΒ  on purpose as I was being extravagant and it goes against the grain πŸ˜‰πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

There is no place for extravagance on this forum. You should be ashamed of yourself. We are in the depths of recession you know!πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Some poor beggar has given up a days shooting so he can put cheese on top of his tatties.

That looks very nice- I have never thought of putting cheese on top ?

Β

Is this some sort of regional variation ? - serious question.

( I am from Lancashire originally)Β  but did live in Derby for about 7 years - do not recall ever having been served cottage pie with cheese topping .

A bit of grated extra strong cheddar makes a nice topping, and even just a bit of melted butter on top of the mash makes a lovely crispy top in a very hot oven or under a grill.

Another 'variation' with the mash part is a bit of either horseradish, or grainy mustard mixed in when making the mash.

We live close to Derby and my wife was born there. She likes to put cheese topping on cottage pie. My mother was from Notts and never did this.Β
I hate cheese! So half our cottage pie has cheese, the other half doesn’t.

The wife says there is usually a bunch of wimin waiting for the reduced price trolley roll out most afternoons at Tesco. The wimin fight to get what they want and its usually stripped out of all but that which few people want.

I've never heard of cheese on top either' - that reminds me of the regional variations of jam or cream on top. :-)

That looks excellent ( for a Yorkshire man 😁)

I have never tried Henderson's sauce but use Lea and Perrins Worcestershire sauce and Colman's English mustard in mine.

I also note that you put in peas and ale, I never put any vegetables in either cottage pie made with beef mince or shepherd's pie made with lamb mince plus I use a lot of venison mince, vegetables are always served on the side. Many people do of course put carrots or peas in .

I suppose that is a regional variation like Lancashire hotpot, everyone has their own recipe probably from mothers and grandmothers

One variation I can think of on Shepherds or Cottage pie is Cumberland pie.Β  That had the meat section in 'chunks' rather than minced.

There are so many variations you can do.Β  Other favourites of mine are to add to the beef based mince filling some tomato (either tinned, or puree), some peppers, chillies, mushrooms, even a little garlic etc.

Gameking - often left in oven to cook on timer so more a case of 1 pot meal - nothing better that getting in the door to warm house and waft of a cooked hearty tea just about ready in the oven. kettle on and cup of tea ( wine or beer after cuppa with tea !! ) !

Onion, carrot and celery ( all finely chopped and softened before browning the mince )Β

had a venison cottage pie in an Italian up the dales once it was flipping Β sublime, the young lady serving noted the dog whistle that rarely leaves my neck ( false of habit ) asked if I had a working dog ? and suggested if I liked trying game I may like to try the local venison cottage pie !

trying to remember the blooming name of the place or where it was !!!
