oldypigeonpopper
Hello, Most types of Vermin shooting you need to get out checking farms / etc, but unless your part of the farming community it may be difficult to find anyone taking a stranger on and most would already have some people on Vermin shooting who the Farmer knows well, you can put an add in a local village newspaper, or start off beating on a local shoot or 2, also Try Guns on Pegs for Game shooting

bruno22rf
You may need some kind of lift up hinged lid on those or small birds are going to binge on them.

Hello .... Yes, the next two boxes are going to have a flap over the tray. I am going to start shooting the first two boxes next Saturday morning, i have regular visitors, so should be a good session.

A lot will depend on the weather, the availability of natural food and your bait but the feeders look very good - good luck next Saturday, with any luck I will be out doing the same. Did you get many offers to your initial post?
Zeitgeist
Checked the feeders again, plenty of squirrels around, feed is going down .... so should be a good first shoot. Jays and Magpies in the area too, so plenty of fly tying materials soon. I have had one contact for the shooting of vermin, hopefully something will come of it, however all gone quiet at the moment. bruno22rf
Shooting Jays is a massive no no in my book, see them on my various perms but not interested in shooting them.

Sounds promising. If you’re using peanuts, jays will empty your feeders pretty quick too.

I suppose if you leave some on the platform they will soon learn where the rest is?

Zeitgeist
All of the videos I have watched, the squirrels will soon learn how to lift the flap. Every time I refill the feeder I put a few peanuts on the platform, as well as a few drops of Aniseed oil. This weekend looks like it's going to be a wash out, so I'll see in the morning. It depends what you want from your perms really i suppose I want to give the little farmland and woodland birds the best chance i can - i have seen jays take full nests of chicks - eggs the lot - They are in my opinion specialists of the woods with their cousin the magpie more of the hedge - garden menace

Ever seen a jay systematically hunt out nests along the hedge line of a remote river or field ? It's heartbreaking, but it's nature as you well know. They usually 'hunt' solitary, whereas magpies do this in numbers. I shoot either if possible, but jays are much more furtive and consequently harder to shoot. They are IMO a very stunning looking bird.
