Early part of last week I got a reminder to say my over 70s car licence run out the second week in August and I can now renew it on line , so that night I went through the easy to follow guide of how to renew it on line , I filled everything in they wanted to know and clicked it at the end , I got a recorded Email to say they have received it and that was it , yesterday morning I got a Brown envelope through my door with my brand new three year licence , this took less than a week from the time I got the reminder and then filled the form and applied for my new one . now we hear a lot of horror stories but you could not knock the service I had just received . WELL DONE D V L A.

P S    Thanks to Westley for telling me to hang on to my ole one till my new one arrive , my ole one is now cut up and will be on the way to the D V L A very soon .  :good:

Just check to make sure it has all your entitlements on there, they have been known to remove some of them on occasions

I think the only thing is they remove 7.5 tonners from your licence after age 70 . I believe? you can ask to keep that entitlement if you need it??

This is correct. Strange one is I still have a full motor bike entitlement and I have not sat on a bike since 1965..

Exactly! As you are aware, I bought a bike (although under 10bhp!) last year after a break since 1971. My licence, like yours, gives ‘Grandad rights’ to ride any motorcycle, despite the fact that some are now 200 hp.  When I last had a bike I think 56hp was about the most powerful available commercially.

Credit where credit is due.  I recently changed cars, trading one in and cancelling the excise duty and replacing it with another, the transaction being done on line from the dealer's showroom.  The new log book for the car I had bought arrived in about 3 days, as did a letter telling me they had noted I was no longer the registered keeper of the old car - and the balance of the tax on the old car would be refunded within [a short period, can't remember exactly what] - and in fact, a cheque arrived in around a week for the refund of the tax.

All in - a good efficient service again from DVLA.

Why can't FAC and SCG renewals be equally good?

There was a lot of people who had there licences returned when updating them without entitlements they had previously held and were unable to prove they had them, eg.. motorcyle entitlement. Not deliberately, but problems with I.T. apparently

I too renewed my license but had to send a new photo as my passport had expired and they normally accept passport details so no new photo would have been required. Even so, I received my new license within a week.

The DVLA has made big changes within and how it operates since the Covid chaos.

Many of the long service staff have left or going to work for The Land Registry Office.

Maybe the new staff they have employed want to work and are more efficient!

I do know since the DVLA opened a place in Birmingham and recruited people within the locality, it has eased the huge backlog, and made it more efficient.
