alan123shooting
Following the Holts bargain, back in January, the J Hobson boxlock eject and case for £110. I have had a better recoil pad fitted and tidied the stock up , I relined and refitted the case, l also made new straps and managed to get a label via the internet and made a copy. I finished it today, it would have been done sooner but had major surgery back in February which delayed things . All in gun, case and pad for under £180 not bad, very happy

bruno22rf
You might try staining the label by dipping it in weak Tea - gives the impression of age.

I normally use dry coffee powder myself and dust off the workshop floor, as I find damping a paper label can cause it to wrinkle, but I prefer a clean label with a reline if it’s my case, as it would have been when first made Edited June 5, 2024 by alan123shooting

HantsRob
By contrast I like exactly what you've done to the case, and I would be a proud owner of that! Such a lovely job!
Old Boggy
A superb job there Alan as usual I would add, having seen some of your work previously. I sincerely hope that the surgery went according to plan and that a full recovery has ensued. All the very best. OB

oldypigeonpopper
Hello, i have always hankered after a hammer gun since i have loads of 65 mm cartridges, i remember my friends grand dads gun who had a farm in the village , i did try a side by side a few years back but even with ear defenders it gave me a head ache which my O/U does not do, i never had that when i had a AYA XXV Boxlock ?? and used ear plugs

I can understand a XXV giving a headache as there is quite a lot more noise from the short barrels. Also, Damascus barrels have a slightly different sound, but I would think that would be less likely to irritate as it has less 'ring' to it. It may be that the gun was a poor fit and was hitting your cheek - but I would have expected that to be noticeable. I have two hammer guns and noise/recoil wise they are like any other similar (s/s) gun of similar weight. Many do tend to be a slightly different fit as people were smaller than and fashions in mount/style change slightly.

Try shooting a Darne - then you will know! To be honest, you mainly notice it IF the gun is a poor fit.

Feltwad
If a gun is a bad fit for the shooter or not held properly it will kick another more common fault is heavy loaded cartridge's. I shoot big bore muzzle loader and breech loaders from 12 down too a 32 and have not witnessed a vicious kick Feltwad.

I can relate to your comment regards the recoil from a Darne. Super light for the French walked up style of shooting, but at the detriment of excessive recoil. Also, due to their construction (Screw going back from the action into the stock) virtually impossible to put cast on or off to the stock. I`ve shot my pal`s Darne and along with the recoil, found the reloading an absolute pain. Just my opinion, but he loves it. OB
alan123shooting
A chap I have done work for, his Darne which is a 16 bore Chris, he has more money than sense and arms like a gorilla, had it re- stocked so it would fit him. It handles really well now, needless to say I did the case for it
London Best
In over 60 years of shooting I have never seen much less handled a Darne gun. I know Gough Thomas rated them highly.
