steve_b_wales Posted Tuesday at 15:37 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 15:37 Last night at 23:15, my wife received two text messages from her bank (Co-op) to say that her card was declined due to fraudulently being used. She contacted them straight away and was told that someone had tried ten times to buy something on Amazon for £105.16 and also an attempt to pay UBER. The bank cancelled her card and a new one will be sent in due course. Thankfully, banks like the Co-op are on the ball, keeping an eye out for things like this. I had exactly the same with a NatWest card a few years ago, shortly after I had returned from United States. The card had been cloned by a dodgy card reader in a rural store somewhere. Dougy Posted Tuesday at 16:32 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 16:32 I was very dubious about on line banking, but having looked into the security process and password protection's in place i decided to go ahead with online banking. You can set up notifications of every online payments made to anyone form your accounts, you can freeze any online Gambling payments, freeze any payments out of the country and set limits to payments out of your accounts, plus lot more. This all came about after i was scammed out of just under £1500.00 in less than 36 hours.
countryman Posted Tuesday at 17:12 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 17:12 My Daughter has had her card used twice fraudulently from the same car hire place where she did hire a car from in Barcelona last year, the last amount was £400 which took several weeks to get back, you would think someone would be able to track down and prosecute. steve_b_wales Posted Tuesday at 17:32 Author Report Share Posted Tuesday at 17:32 Further to my first post, approx' 12 years ago, I purchased a hunting DVD from a company called Zimbi Books in South Africa, and used my card to make the payment. A few days later, I went to pay for fuel and my card was declined. I contacted my bank who then informed me that they had 'frozen' the card, and asked me if I had tried to purchase £900 worth of diamonds in South Africa. When I replied that I hadn't, they then said that they thought so as well as the attempted purchase brought up a red flag. Later, I contacted Zimbi Books and informed them that someone working for them is a corrupt *********! They never replied.

Banks are not interested in chasing up these small time crooks, i gathered info on the name of the guy who started off the scam on my card, sent it to the bank and the police with what i thought was his address. Not interested. I now have 3 separate accounts, 1 is solely for any online purchases with minimum amount in.
Spr1985 Posted Tuesday at 18:54 Report Share Posted Tuesday at 18:54 My most recent experience was two transactions of £20 each the second of the two was whilst I was on the phone to the Barclays fraud department regarding the first transaction, I have been done 4 or five times over the last couple of years, the odd thing is I tend not to use the physical card and instead use Apple Pay/ Apple wallet or PayPal for the added protection they offer, I therefore can’t even pinpoint where they’re getting my card details from. It’s so frustrating but as mentioned no one’s really interested and it’s just a case of waiting on the money to be returned via the banks fraud department. Holiday car hire fraud is notorious. My son hired a car a few years back in Spain. No problems with it except it was a bit old and tatty. He returned it OK no problems at the time and went home. Several weeks later they put through a charge on his card for about £250 for a "missing spare wheel" It's a well known scam but his card company wouldn't get involved because he had signed the hire agreement and in doing so had accepted their terms and conditions. The moral of the story is be careful who you hire from. Edited Tuesday at 21:25 by Vince Green

They start with small transactions which generally go unnoticed, then increases rapidly. It costs the UK banking industry billions each year in fraud payment compensation one way or another. They are clever, because people tap their card every time they buy anything, so small transactions just blend in with the dozens (or even hundreds) of lines on your statement each month. So they take a small amount from lots of people regularly and nobody notices.
Newbie to this Posted Thursday at 11:17 Report Share Posted Thursday at 11:17 (edited) I had it recently, with Uber charges coming in on my bank card, I have never used my bank card on uber, Luckily I have notifications setup on my banking app, and I froze the card stopping the second transaction going through, and most likely others for much more money. I have no idea where the card got cloned, and I'm certain no one had access to the 3 digit security code, which I believe is needed to add a card to an uber account.
