tosspot
Don't know where they come from but the Mrs was given an unopened pack of butter biscuits the other day to feed to the chickens and left them on the breakfast bar, I comes home from work late and tucks into them whilst perusing this very site thinking they tasted a bit odd, only to be told the next morning they were four years out of date

andovian
I always use the gurgle indicator method - eat the food in question then at 3am you wake up with a loud gurgling followed by an almighy ****! if you can still see the duvet you know everything is fine :(
southernlad
Eyes and a sense of smell were given to us for this purpose. If it's an egg and it's green don't eat it. If it looks fine, smells fine and tastes fine, I don't care what the use by date is - why waste good food? Plus most of the food you buy nowadays has got so much preservative in it it'll probably still be edible when I'm six feet under. I did a little test on a loaf of bread a couple of months ago because it always amazed me how long it would last before going mouldy - 6 weeks in the fridge. Won't be buying that brand again! happyhunt
a guy at work yesterday eat a yogurt that was dated 22sept, about seven weeks past its best. he was still alive today so it must have been alright,it was nearly pure penicilan. brave man
Dr W
I think a lot of the dates are put there to cover the manufacturers *****, things are usually fine a few days past their use by date.
Chard
Don't know where they come from but the Mrs was given an unopened pack of butter biscuits the other day to feed to the chickens and left them on the breakfast bar, I comes home from work late and tucks into them whilst perusing this very site thinking they tasted a bit odd, only to be told the next morning they were four years out of date I don't worry too much about dates, except fish, meat and dairy stuff, then I'm a bit more wary, though I still trust my nose more than their dates. Not sure I fancy 4 year old butter biscuits though I'm surprised they didn't walk off when you opened the packet
henry d
The "cook" at our work sometimes forgets things in the pantry, like tins of "Cook in sauce" etc. The worst one we found was 3 years out of date She defends herself by saying it`s a best before date, not an consume before date and she has the right to decide whether it is OK or not We tend to vote with our feet and bring in our own food
al4x
usually i just sniff if its over if it sniffs fine then I'll eat it. laughed at my other half the other day telling me some tonic water was out of date so no good. She had the last laugh as it goes flat, pretty **** gin and tonic that was

henry d
Don`t know about the young bit, but we range from mid-twenties to early fifties and there are 13 as a minimum crewing level as well as day related officers........however not all are male So basically there are a good few of us there that are, to get us back on topic, past our sell by date

njc110381
I tend to go by the smell of things, it's easy to tell if something isn't right. None of the meat I buy has a date on it, as it comes in bags from the butcher. All this stuff is kind of linked to the fact that the average public have no idea how to survive these days. Hunting is a terrible thing, everything has to be washed before it's eaten. What's wrong with eating the bugs in the blackberries and rubbing a carrot on your trousers to get the mud off? I'd LMAO if the world ever goes belly up, as we and our families/friends would be the only ones left in the end

Bleeh
You have to remember that the ''sell by date'' has about a month or two on most items, (and a week / fortnight on dairy/Meat) To make sure that it's consumed way it can go off. I'd eat anything up to any date along as it tasted okay. (This, is after all, the reason we have taste buds - to determin if something is consumable or not)
Dunkield
Exactly, there will always be a factor of safety built in, you could probably get away with far more than you think.
njc110381
I can think of times that I've thrown things out that have been well in date! Just now and again something goes wrong, and the food is bad before it's supposed to be. Maybe that's why I hear a lot about food poisoning, but have never actually had it
