Nomination For The Worst Gun Shop In Britain

Many, many years ago i wanted a s/s 12 bore for wildfowling and spent one saturday trolling all the local(ish) gunshops. I found a lovely, quite heavy AYA no2 with 2.3/4" magnum proof barrels at Carey's of Ledbury. I went back on the Monday with the cash, but the guy there just didn't want to serve me. He kept serving other people, answering the phone, then served another guy who had just come in. Time after time he did this. I waited one and a half hours and then walked out. I went down to Litts and bought a beretta o/u, I have never been back to Carey's.

I have ordered from Deep Blue, it came quickly and was at a good price. I will now be careful with them, thanks.

The worst was Carey's, the best was Macleods of Tain, incredibly helpful and very competitive. Litt's were good (before the crash).

We are talking about a new gun And i was reading out my credit card number !! when the announced this to me ...

Funny London is full of people from every other part of the country and from most places around the world.

If they act properly we accept them without prejudice no matter what the accent. As soon as we Londoners travel outside we are looked at with prejudice.

I don't think a Londoner has ever hanged a monkey and we don't have wooly girlfriends. Is that what makes us different? Perhaps it's because we generate most money for the country..

No, it's because they think they know everything :hmm:

They think the world revolves round them

They think everybody else adores them

They eat jellied eels

That is the view from Kent (where I grew up) and Manchester (where I now live)

It's the only thing the North and South agree on

Breadon hill has to be the worst round here, he seriosly didnt know the differnce bettween and escort and a berreta, I had 2 trips there once when he said he had an escort 12b 3" went to have a look and it was 20b the second time a week later he produced an berreta (I would've had the berreta, shame it was 900 quid more) and then produced a 3.5" escort

I now travel a bit further to shooting supplies in bromsgrove, first class service :hmm:

ETLS, It's Bredon Hill Shooting Supplies. Who served you? Because it cannot have been either of the Davies, father or son! They do know the difference and would charge you top dollar for either. Unless Mike has developed alzheimers in the last month?

It was the father, the son is very helpful, and I have spoken to him at shows etc. This 'experiance' has put me off :hmm:

Good idea, much cheaper to shop around, they are very pricey. I will have to pull mikes leg about this when I see him next. Thanks for the ammunition.

Bucks gun shops (in my experience)

Frederick Beesley's, Donaldson's and Oxford Gun Co....bad service (feels like they're only bothered if you're spending a LOT of money)

Stockcraft's in Milton Keynes...good service (will give good advice, friendly, well stocked and good prices too!)

Anyone else had similar experience with these shops?

I agree mate, Donaldsons didnt give me the time of day when i was in there.

Went to Stockcrafts in stony stratford and spent ages in there chatting, trying guns etc :hmm:

you can guess who will get my future service

Another big tick for R & K Stockcraft.

When I purchased my first shotgun, they spent ages with me checking dominance, mount, fit - and fully kitted me out without charging over the odds. I recently popped in there with my eldest for a chat about a gun for him and, knowing that I wasn't going to spend any money that day, actually spent a good 10 minutes with him finding the right size etc - top class

Agree completley with the other comments about Bucks shop.....

One worth a mention also is Sheephouse Shooting Supplies in Maidenhead - I work down that way and often pop in at lunchtime. They are always on hand for a chat and a talk through the guns they have in stock - also a fly fishery which I've never had time to fish, but looks great!!!

I've tried to order a few things from Deep Blue, but each time they've cancelled the order because they didn't actually have stock (even though their website said they did).

Have tried quite a few local gunshops. Best ones in my book are:

Simpsons of Newmarket - bought my first shotgun from them and Barry Simpson spent a lot of time making sure it fitted, showed me how to clean it and even gave me a tip that sorted out my eye dominance problem!

Sporting Target of Riseley - not the cheapest, but a decent range and excellent service.

Just to jump on the band wagon of slagging off deep blue; I ordered a fair bit from them over the phone. After waiting more than a month and hearing nothing from them, I finally got an answer to where the kit was. They didnt actually stock any of it and were waiting for a delivery. I explained I ordered it straight from the website and it states it was in stock and dont bother sending me the goods as I'm cancelling my order.

I live half way between R&K Stockcraft and Donaldsons, and have used both regularly, but I have a definite favourite. Prices are about the same and both pretty well stocked but Donaldsons somehow make you feel they are doing you a favour by letting you buy stuff whereas Stockcraft seem glad of the business and are always helpful and chatty. Thats all it takes for me to turn left instead of right at the end of the road.
