Changing a gun safe

Hiya All

I dont see why the Police need to know the capacity of security cabinets.

Security is the responsibility of the Certificate holder - as far as I am aware (and I am no expert) with shotguns there is no indicated maximum that you can hold/own. Firearms on the other hand are limited by what you are allowed to acquire/possess.

Whilst it may seem a good idea to let your local Police Service Firearms Department know all manner of things they have a habit of then using this against everyone else when they are not entitled to as laid down in Firearms Law or Home Office Guidance.

In my opinion tread warily along this road.........lest all are made to follow without legal weight.

An example of this is many Police Services insisting on say DSC1 or equivalent before granting a firearms certificate - the Law and Home Office Guidance does not state that this is required but because many have followed this without question it has become the 'norm' and is applied with no legal backing.

my feo told me it didnt matter about the size of the cabinet as long as you could house them safely.i was told if you stack your guns alternately barrel up,barrel down you can increase the capacity of your cabinet.they also have no record of the size of my cabinet[never been asked, and never voulunteered the imformation].so i cant see as changing your cabinet for a larger one would make much difference.the responsibility is on you to keep your guns secure

i recently changed my cabinet to a 9 gun , i was told i HAD to have a re-inspection by my F.E.O,( Lancashire)

when he inspected it he then asked how many guns i would like to keep in it,i replied 7 ( bit more space so they don,t get damaged) i was told that that was the number of firearms allowed on my licensce unless i bought another cabinet or a larger one

I am 100% sure that my answer is correct.

Well, that must be a first..??

I'm 99% certain that you don't have to inform them, provided that the cabinet meets the security requirements as set out by the police and is no less secure than the one you are replacing, you'll really get your FEO hacked off if you phone him every 5 minutes, there's plenty of sound advice available on this forum.

The answer to this is YES you have to inform the firearms department as you are only allowed to keep as many guns as you have safe storage for.

I come under the Northumberland Department and when I increased the capacity by adding another cabinet the FEO came out to inspect it and reported this information back, so that it is entered against my name, suspect that I would soon get another visit if I went over this max number.

Yeh mong boys right. Just 'wing it'. I mean its not important or anything. I would remove the gun safe and just not bother putting one back, lean them against your bathroom wall or something. Thats safe enough. For gods sake though don't tell them you're changing your home security, that would be way too sensible.

You're half right, you are allowed to have as many shotguns as you want on you want on your SGC, but most police departments want you to have some sort of added security (Security doors/alarms) when you're collection becomes too big (more than 10, 12 guns)

I got a call from firearms last year asking how i could fit 5 guns into a 2 gun cabinet (which is what i had at the time of my initial interview) - Told them i had changed it to a 5 gun cab as the collection grew and they went happily on their way. Regardless of Cat's advice, think it might be worth a 2 minute call or an e mail just to advise them.

I was told by mine that he had made a note of my cabinet size (3) and that if more guns were to appear on my cert they might give me a ring. Obviously they dont want me to have 3 locked away and then another 10 wrapped in sheets in the loft.

give your FEO a quick bell and let them know. wont hurt!

personally I'd just change it, mine has been moved round the house 3 times recently as its being renovated and I've not informed plod as I know its well secured were they ever to want to check, FEO's are sensible and they know people will change cabinets etc hence they check arrangements at each renewal in case they have changed. In my case he can look where it was but its been demolished now B)

  • 3 months later...

im in lancashire and they seem to have limited my cabinet to 5 guns (shotguns and rifles) and as ive applied for 3 rifles and already had 3 shotguns they wanted me to sell a shotgun or get another cabinet

but to me a 2gun cabinet with 2 guns in is as secure as a 5 gun with 6 guns in??
