soreshoulder
ok you've been on a good walk out and you have used all of your cartridges except one. As your walking back you see a fox and a cub. Now the Farmer wants foxes shot on sight. Which one do you shoot. The vixen leaving the cub to run and starve and then grow up to be other problem foxes. Or the Cub leaving the vixen to be free to have another litter and be problem fox again?? Edited May 29, 2009 by soreshoulder

groach1234
i would go for neither, i lack the experience to know my one shot would kill and if i scuffed the shot then would have to run to the car for carts whilst it suffered but thats me. Edward
I would use the two spare carts that I always carry, to shoot the vixen after I shot the cub. Sorted

Doggone
Vixen would not come to the cub , but the cub would come to the vixen I found 5 cubs playing near their hole last week. I had night vision at 160yds range. I shot the first cub, then the 2nd, when the vixen appeared and retrieved it. Same with the 4th. Eventually shot the last cub, then the vixen appeared and walked across the field in front of us, stopped her with a bark and shot her too. All this happened in the space of 30mins, not good for an old *** with angina. I have to add though if I'd had half a chance at the vixen earlier, I would have prefered to shoot her first. Doggone
Would you of done the same under a lamp How do you mean? Would I have been so successful, or would I have tried? Before I had night vision, I would have tried to get nearer so I could use a dark red filter, but if you don't get the vixen first she would in my experience keep calling the cubs back to a safe distance. Easy if mum's not there, but you usually find that she soon turns up when the shooting starts, and even though it's difficult for her to gather all the cubs round her, she will eventually lead the ones that you've not shot to safety. It's a lot more clinical with night vision, and much easier to have a complete clean up in one session. Andy

Bombadil
I don't shoot foxes as i lack the appropriate weapon, but i imagine if i did i would go for the cub. Vegetarians and the like have issues grasping how phenominally diffrent we are from animals, they can feel pain, and they are designed to reproduce, and they are pests. By that logic shooting the vixen would cause unfair pain to the cub through starvation, but shooting the cub would not cause the vixen any pain and would reduce a future pest. Ofcourse i like to think i would not be in such a position in the first place and would be prepared.

Lloyd90
I would choose neither, If I had the option to get another shell n come back then Id shoot the vixen, get a shell n come back for the cub
stokie
Correct me if im wrong, but if it was a deer you are told to shoot the young first then the mother so as to not run the risk of leaving the dependant young to starve to death. This is suggested to be the humane way I dont shoot fox myself but I think thats what I would do
hurstpol
I would shoot what I could starting with the sexually mature one first, the others you cant shoot for whatever reason will come again but it is a good hypothetical argument

al4x
all depends if you are doing pest control or leisure shooting. If you actually need to control the foxes you do as HD says and shoot the vixen first then go back and pick off the cubs. If you start on the cubs the vixen will move the other cubs from that location and you won't get another go.
