  1. Wow - a very good tip from me, at last ! I think I was told this by the senior members of Hampshire Police's clay pigeon shooting section in the late 1980s.
  2. The Heron is a protected species on these shores, Hubertus. I understand that it was a delicacy in the Middle Ages though. What does it taste like ?
  3. That's mega fast ! You are right to keep your S410. There are ample opportunities for air rifles on most shoots, where a rimmy will be totally out of the question. I like my CZ very much. Rather too much according to the Mrs !
  4. I had a Sheridan blue streak - yikes ! it was 18 years ago !! It was powerful. It took some pumping and it was very loud. Thankfully I had an alloy adapter to screw a silencer onto. I put some thin leather on the pump to stop it rubbing the finish off the cylinder. You had to be careful not to let the pump handle smack against the cylinder as it would make quite a racket. The scope was attached by a thing called an intermount, which was not great. It never seemed to hold zero. It was hard to pump with a scope in place, as the best place for your hand is where the scope should be. I remember thinking that a Williams peepsight would be best on this rifle. I hunted rabbits with it once. Getting a second shot off was impossible due to the pumping required. I didn't use it again as I had a better option available. It would have been great on rats - fast, pointable, and as the ads said, light enough to carry all day. Having the option of using only 2 pumps for plinking was fun. I don't remember having any issues with the single stage trigger. I tended to just point and shoot with it, with both eyes open, more like a shotgun than a rifle. It was great for that sort of instinctive shooting. I loved it, and kinda wish I'd kept it. It was huge fun to shoot and the look and feel was spot on. But I would not have it as a main hunting rifle - more of a fun, high quality plinker/target shooter.
  5. I find that the midges don't sit still long enough to get the lotion on them.
  6. I see that your talent with a gun is as old as your talent for good photos. You could pass for an Englishman in the last photo with the ducks ! Keep it up. I really enjoy seeing your photos.
  7. I've seen this on my patch and I have to confess that I left the young rabbits for Mr Fox. The livers were enormous - these were half-grown little fryers and the livers were twice the size of an adult rabbit's.
  8. Sounds a bit too ancient now for information to be readily available. You could try writing to the antique expert chap at Sporting Gun.
  9. Love my CZ style. Synthetic/nickelised - great gun
  10. Nick, you have made my cleaning routine easier ! I'll check the manual but in future I will just laugh at the caked-up piston as I pop it back into place with nary a drop of oil or rag near it. Cheers
  11. Sound choices - happy shooting to both of you.
  12. Thanks for posting all this chaps. I've got a lovely Beretta 302. It gets cleaned after every trip unless I am using it again within 7 days, in which case, it's just a wipe over with an oily rag to remove finger marks. I take the trigger mech out about every fifth time of cleaning it and clean that with a toothbrush. I have never removed the magazine spring, but I'll have a go at that next time now I know how. One thing I found useful was a bottle of alloy wheel cleaner which cleaned the piston up nicely. I only did this once when I acquired the gun to remove built-up crud.
  13. Thanks for posting all of this, especially the pictures. I'm thinking of getting a SAK mod and this is so useful.
  14. Great pictures all nicelly composed - thanks for posting ! It is very interesting to see the recovered HP subby round. As you say, they mainly pass right through in my experience too. Nice shooting.
  15. My only experience with a pump action was on a 25m pistol range in France. It was loaded with solid slug. My first shot took out the left side of the target frame and my second the right, so that the target dropped to the ground. It was rather cool. I didn't say that on each occasion I was aiming for the bull. I'd not bother with one personally.

    Rabbits

And there's me thinking ice cream chimes would be best... ! You learn something new every day on here.
  17. I'd agree. Most common game shells are 2.5" anyway (obviously check !) It's the 2-inchers that have a very restricted cartridge choice. Heavier cartridges for fox and non toxics for wildfowling might well be 2.75" though. You'll certainly be able to get a lovely quality english sbs in this chambering which will balance well and last ages with TLC.

    Rabbit

    Well told, that one.
  19. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/5012260.stm Well Frank, I reckon you could help these lads out. Mimicry is the sincerest form of flattery after all.
  20. I suppose I have my See Zed or my Webb Lee.
  21. Nice shooting Frank. Lovely meat. My parents kept goats when I were a lad. Some were pets, others not. Because the goats were for milking, we had to keep them breeding. We used to cull billy kids immediately on birth, but on one occasion we let them grow and had them for the freezer. The goat curry my Mum made was delicious, I remember the taste well. Enjoy it !
  22. Concentration, practice, reactions. I used to enjoy DTL immensely. When I had a first barrel hit, I would often shoot at the biggest piece of clay for extra practice (probably not strictly in accordance with the rules I know !)
  23. Have you got a licence for that dangerous looking nasty handgun ? I thought they were banned, 'cos everyone knows how nasty and dangerous they are !! Never mind, at least you won't need that Barratt 50 cal now.
