  1. Thanks one and all for your comments and advice.
  2. Maybe an odd question to some, so no brick throwing please. I took a friend interested in taking up shooting to a local clay ground and he used my Beretta Silver Pigeon sporter adjustable with 30” barrels. He found it rather heavy (3.5 kgs: 7.8 lbs) and asked if there were lighter shotguns around. Insufficient knowledge, I couldn’t answer his question. Curiosity got the better of me. I have had a quick search for 12 bores at around 6.5 - 7 lbs but those I’ve seen have 28” barrels. Are there any lightweight guns with 30” barrels out there? Is so, then advice on Manufacture and model No would be welcomed which I can then pass on. Thank you.
  3. Between 1963 to 1969 I played in two Bristol Groups. Often we were the support act to well known acts. Theses included the American “Byrds” (Bristol Corn Exchange); Lulu (the British Legion, Coleford Nr Bath) Herman’s Hermits (Fairfax House, Bristol) Wayne Fontana (The Corn Exchange) Dave Dee, Dozey, Mick and Tich (Bath Pavilion); Chickenshack (with Christine Perfect) (Newton St Loe teacher training college): The Kinks (Sofia Gardens Cardiff). We also had three appearances on the BBC programme “TOM TOM” (John Earle and Jeremy Carrard). Two programmes were live. One as a backing group to innovations in musical instruments, the second as backing group to innovations in dress fabrics. The third was how to make a record - we did the Beatles “Nowhere Man”. I did contact the BBC to get a copy of the recording. I was told that sadly, at that time, they didn’t realise they were recording history so most tapes were re-used, including ours.
  4. There is a new contender. The D-in-Law of my shooting buddy has searched the web and is of the view that it is a Cicada. Below is photo from the web of a Cicada. The eyes are very similar and suggest she may be right.
  5. Can anyone identify this bug please? Apologies for picture quality, it was forwarded by my shooting buddy. Many thanks

  8. She’s off again. The person who demands privacy now blathering to the press and news channels and anyone who will report / print her words. E.g how “Mail on Sunday privacy battle cost Harry his relationship with his father”: “We upset Royal dynamics by just existing” Quite Nauseating

Who are “we”? What do you propose “we” should do? Are you going to take the lead in taking those proposals forward?
  12. Massive head cold on Mothers Day. Tested positive. Symptoms lessened over the next three days then I felt fine. No recurring problems. Must be one of the lucky ones. I've had 4 jabs.
  13. An interesting post. Thank you. It’s interesting where savings can be made in one area to help fund another. (My shooting) I’ve been retired many years. Despite retirement I continued the habit of buying the Daily Telegraph ( each to his own), also at weekends. A combination of lockdown and the increase in cartridge prices caused me to examine my outgoings. I decided not to buy the newspaper and get my news in other ways, only occasionally buying the mini Independent. At todays prices, not buying the Telegraph will fund over 2000 cartridges. For example, £2.80 / day x 5 + £3.50 Sat + £3.00 Sun = £20.50 / week x 52 weeks = £1,066.

  17. Only just picked on this post. From my past BSAC sub-Aqua past time (21 years, including tickets for TDI gas mixing, Nitrox, and compressor operator) I am somewhat surprised that any test centre worth its salt would fit a 232 pillar valve to a 300 bar cylinder. Particularly as IDEST guidance is not to fill cylinders with mismatched valves. Because of the higher pressure, a 300 bar cylinder / pillar valve work on a 7 thread whereas 232 bar is a 5 thread. Certainly the 232 “A”clamp valve will fit but it is not designed to operate at the higher pressure. Had I been a diver picking up that cylinder I would have been right peeeeed off as all my regulators were all Din fittings and wouldn’t have worked. Moreover, I would have given serious thought to contacting HSE re the test centre for mismatching cylinder and valve. No, I’m not a josworth but in diving it has to be right for obvious reasons.
  18. It being over 20 years since her father died, my daughter-in-law was rummaging through his strong box in the attic and found these. (He was a Senior Army Officer who took an interest in Armament improvements). The leaflet is self explanatory. But are there any PW members with personal knowledge of these items? Did they actually come into use, for example. Of particular interest would be advice from this knowledgeable community as to the legality of their retention by my daughter-in-law. Thanks.

  22. In the late 70’s I visited a number of Naval bases. The soap bars in the heads (toilets) were cut blocks. I believe it was known as “Pussers Hard” !!
  23. Nostalgia indeed. At home in the 50’s my mum always had a copy of Pears Cyclopaedia and the first page was a drawing of a dirty tramp writing a letter saying “I used your soap two years ago since when I have used no other”. I use coal tar soap when on holiday. Part of being away. My father was a Brylcreem Boy (ex RAF) with Imperial Leather soap and Old Spice aftershave.
