  1. A few years ago I shot a carrion crow, locally called hoodie, which had an extremely thin beak which crossed scissor like at the outer end. Blackpowder
  2. I am with Cranfield on that, plastic decs are ok to start you off, (sometimes) but once you start to fill your decoy pattern with dead birds propped up as he suggests, incoming pigeons approach the set with a much greater degree of confidence. Blackpowder
  3. A piece of wet and dry sandpaper on a flat surface makes an excellent hone for the final touches. Blackpowder
  4. I thought he had connections with the Reds?? Blackpowder
  5. Fuel increase, transport cost increase inflation increase and that in the business world alone. It would not be so bad if the money was spent on our roads, in north Northumbria and Berwickshire we stil have parts of the A1 which are still single carriageway. Once again the motorist is to be hit hard to pay for Labours mismanagement of the economy, its social experiments and general wastefulness. It is another blow to rural life, both socially and business wise, but of course Darling and Brown will trot out the old chestnut of global warming to justify this latest act of highway robbery. 6. Louise Gray probably knows as much about deer control as a dog knows about its own father. Blackpowder
  7. Yes meant to add that Dave eventually the paper cases became unavailable and I also used Fiocchi chrome plated metal cases. Best shot a running hare at 15 yards stone dead, a total fluke several very low pheasants and sitting rabbits. The staff of the old Forrest of Kelso shop were a mine of information in the 60's and I was told that pre WW2 you could buy solid ball loads in this calibre called I think breech cap bullets or somthing like that. 8. I believe that what we know as 9mm garden gun was once known as No 3 garden gun, and .22 shotshell was called No1 garden gun, dont ask me what No 2 was as I dont have a clue. 9mm cartridges by Eley had copper heads and paper cases, once the paper cases had a chueqred pattern but later were plain dull green. The interesting thing is that the paper cases seperated from the copper head and were supposedly fired down the barrel, a real risk when being used indoors in say a hay barn. Thats my recollection of when my sole armament was an , Acme No 3 garden gun. Blackpowder
  9. Your hoodie craw, one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet, except when it comes to Larsen traps. I was told last year that corvies or carrion crows known as hoodies hereabouts had learned to capture smolts on their spring seaward migration at Tweed caulds. A worthy quarry. Blackpowder
  10. Why DOG food?? Blackpowder
  11. I can see by some of the descriptions that with strict discipline 2 in a hide can be quite safe. My main gripe would be you are only getting half the shooting you might have had from an individual hide in a different location. Certainly there can be times when pigeon favour one particular corner of a field but in general would it not be best to use two seperate set ups?? Blackpowder
  12. Now thats what I call a GUN, still going strong over a century on from manufacture. Blackpowder
  13. Its called water hammer and can be caused by a number of reasons. The main ones being a mains pipe needing secured, a tap or ballvalve washer worn, it sounds as if it is the ballvalve on the feed tank in your attic, get the washer replaced, and if you have very high water pressure which cannot be reduced try fitting a larger ball on the ballvalve. 14. I dont think I have ever seen so much water standing on the land like there is at the moment, its not just puddles it is ponds and lochs almost. Yesterday I had to do a cross country trip of 20 miles or so on backroads and almost everywhere a ditch or burn passed under the minor roads the water was backed up and running across the road. Also I noticed in a wood the rabbit warrens were full to the top of water almost. Due to the rain coming from an easterlie direction Tweed the major river has not risen to extreme heights, it is however running high and very dirty while the rain has just about ceased for the moment, ugh. Anyone got drawings for the construction of an Ark. Blackpowder
  15. These are really splendid barrels, with an unusual broad rib for a gun of this vintage. Good luck with the sale. Blackpowder
  16. Is it April 1st already? Blackpowder
  17. Yes I am sure that was in the BASC magazine a while back and referred to better patterns with fibre against plastic, I think it was 20bore loads under discussion! Fibre for me by the way, less mess for a start. Blackpowder

    The Big Day!

All the best MM, I found the worst part was the lack of food, mind my op was postponed for 4 hours due to an emergency I was ******* starving and could drooling at the mouth awaiting fish and chips on the way home. Blackpowder

    ABE

Well I dont know who the genius was who thought up the ABE slogan( whatever that is supposed to mean) but it has certainly brought out a horde of English with a mega chip on their shoulders. Blackpowder

    ABE

Living cheek by jowl with Northumbrians I regard them simply as fellow Scots who have had the misfortune to be born south of the Border. Mind you none of my Northumbrian friends are football supporters. Blackpowder
  22. Sounds like a real enough recipe to me Blackpowder
  23. I have been told £80 at least for my Fiat Scudo van. Blackpowder
  24. This is not a mind boggling recipe but it does make a very quick and palatable tomatoe soup. Ingredients 1 tin chopped tomatoes 1 teaspoon powdered stock A quarter teaspoon dried thyme A pinch of chilli flakes Method Blend tomatoes to a puree, and pour into pan ,place the teaspoon of stock powder in the empty tin and fill with boiling water, stir well to dissolve, add thyme and chilli plus any other seasoning and heat stirring well to mix the ingredients. 25. Out with the local club roost shooting on a major estate in se Scotland. A skiff of snow on the coast here but could be more at the venue inland, bright sunshine and no prospect of any significant wind so no high hopes. Last night 3 of us shot 37 from the same estate that the club shot last weekend for a mere 22 with a dozen members out. It appears as if there are a few more pigeons around here just now but still very low numbers compared to usual. Blackpowder
