  1. Although only a small proportion of PW members will have access to grouse shooting it is intersting to note that grouse have been spotted on a farm right against the North Sea, also at a couple of other locations not normally associated with this game bird. We have had green on the coast for almost a week now but at out pheasant shoot only 3 miles inland access was still impossible to some of the woods yesterday in anything other than a 4wd tractor. Will this lead to a crash in grouse stocks? Blackpowder
  2. Is that by any chance a re-spray job? Blackpowder

  7. Should be smokeless as far as I remember, fueled a zillion central heating boilers when only the great and the good plus local authorities could afford central heating. A byproduct of every local gas works where coal had been , 'cooked' to extract coal gas and tar plus a few other nasties- coke was what was left. Blackpowder
  8. Good point OTH but water service pipes should be bridged or ducted UNDER the foundations to keep them the minimum 750mm below ground level. Blackpowder
  9. Our syndicate landlord is a hunting man so we do not shoot or trap foxes.yet we see surprisingly few on shoot days. Rather we have to depend on making our pens as fox proof as possible, not an easy job as anyone familiar with the job will tell you. I think the reason why so many shooters target foxes is the challenge of outwitting a very intelligent and capable predator regardless of whether game or poultry are being protected. I have heard gamekeepers say that they would never like to see the extinction of the fox, it is part of the job. When centre fire rifles were becoming the vogue among game preservers in the 1970's the price for a good winter head shot fox skin was £15. I dont know the reason but the market collapsed to nil price, the end of lamping? No fear sportsmen had caught the bug for the job and more than ever the winter night is split with search light like beams, and before the popularity of surpressors the sharp crack of a centre fire rifle. 11. Roads in the village here are drivable with care --- if you can get your car to them ,with last nights fall I reckon we have a good foot now and that is on a coastal location. Blackpowder
  12. Estate Tweeds were developed to blend in with the hues of the local landscape, or so I have been told. Other tweeds may be the product of individual mills or as in the case of Harris Tweed a crofters loom. Blackpowder

  14. Hi Joe, I am looking through my book, MG SpOrts CArs and have the following information about the VA. The first is an MG Tickford which I assume was built on an MG chassis by Tickford. This is a drop head coupe with a 4 position soft top. A four seater the car illustrated is in black with red coachlines , red upholstry and a well appointed interior with walnut dashboard etc. The engine is given as 4 cylinder in line 1548cc ated at 55bhp. Also in the above book is a cream 4 seat tourer with red upholstry, the weather protection being less than the Tickford and a fully enclosed 4 seater pictured in wartime outside a pub bearing the sign , The Barley Mow Inn". Clasic cars are indeed elegant , I am green with envy and the best of luck with your project. Blackpowder

  16. Dont know about the Webley but I do know of someone who had a cartridge explode in the mag of a semi auto following the conversion from five to three shot. Incidently he still shoots with a semi auto, although not the one above. Blackpowder

    New Years Eve

Once it was the custom up here that if your house was lit anyone was welcome for a visit and a dram after the witching hour of midnight. Times change of course and today this is less encountered. Mine is an evening meal with friends and perhaps a little sniff at a bottle of 10 year old Blackpowder
  18. It depends upon your interest. An arable farmer will regard hare, pigeon, rabbit and roe deer as a pest, he will look upon fox, buzzard stoat and weasel as allies as predators upon hiss pests or vermin. A shooting person will regard the same predators as enemies and where permitted should make every effort to cull their numbers to protect his quarry species. Blackpowder

  20. Overnight rain has washed the snow away here in coastal Berwickshire, a really raw biting easterly wind making it very cold. Blackpowder
