If it's being fed from the guttering there wouldn't be any silt. Have the pond raised enough so you could have a feed from the rwp and a rwp overflow back to the original drain, job done!

I know what you mean, we used to put rocks in with the 'contents' so if we got boarded by customs one slash with a sharp knife sent the evidence to the sea bed.

If it's close coupled and more than a few years old chances are the wing nuts will be rust welded onto the spindles and turn the top squares as you try to undo them, just one of the many joys of plumbing.
