Things are Starting to Heat up Now with not long to Go. Bit of handbags today at the weigh in. Check it out here. I think Frampton will win this fight' although I wont be Surprised if he gets caught with some good Shots and possibly goes down' but still think he will win it. I like the Kid and wish him all the best tomorrow night in his first defence of his title. Fighting in his backyard again will give him an advantage and he is in incredible shape once again. He seems the real deal' but as with all fighters he has to prove he can do it on the big stage away from Home' which he should get the chance to do in the not to distant future. Kiko Martinez give him a good go last time out and Framton was clearly tiring and struggling abit near the end until he was able to stop him. A 5yr younger Martinez and it could have been a different outcome. UTV the regional ITV are showing a documentary tonight 11.00pm "Day of the Jackal" anyone with a "digi box" should be able to pick it up should they be interested. My Nephew got a chance to meet him a few months back and done a few rounds on the pads with Shane Mc Guigan "Framtons trainer" and met his father Barry. He is going to the fight tomorrow night. Here is a couple of not very clear photos. Check out The Jackal to the left of My Nephew/Mc Guigan in the ring in black Top Good luck Carl.

Firstly' i have been fowling long enough to know that Fowlers have all different opinions on different aspects of the Sport and all will take there own type of pleasures. For some it will be the big bags, others will appreciate the natural beauty of their surroundings and an odd shot or two..For others the peace and quite and for others it is a mixture of some of these things. I' like the person I am quoting dont want to get into a argument about bag numbers' it has been done over and over again and it wont change..What is acceptable for one' wont be for another. For what its Worth' I wouldnt dream of shooting that many geese in a season' even if i had the Chance too. If i was able to shoot that many geese in a season' then it would come across as all to easy and not really what fowling is about for me.But thats just me. Everyman has his own way of going mad as they Say. The reason I am quoting the above post is that' although I think I can see where the poster is coming from and would agree with him to an extent. The way i see it' from what you are saying' It is more Justifying Shooting/killing Wild animals/birds and using them as a food source' and rightly so..I would agree..!! What i would not agree with' and is what I find not a very Sound or valid point' is comparing Domesticated animals such as Pigs,Chickens,Sheep and Cattle ect that are produced/bred on an industrial scale for Human Consumption' to that of Wild Birds. Wildfowl numbers depend on many factors from year to year to be successful and I would fear that if every shooter was to take "Given the opportunity of course" to take large seasonal bags' then it would only be a matter of time before it affected there numbers. "As Forest Gump would Say" Thats all I have to say about that. As for my Season, well due to a number of reasons I could not get out nowhere near as much as i would have liked,However When I did manage to get out for a few flights' i appreciated the Quite time and manged a few Fowl for myself and others which went down well as a seasonal treat.

Looking forward to the Frampton fight and great to see ITV covering it. Valiant effort from Murray lastnight' but Gotta say that GGG is an Animal.

Better late than never' although Moneyman i reckon had to take the fight for fear of tarnishing his name and going down in history as the man who avoided packman. I of course will be cheering on Manny' however i reckon Mayweather thinks now is the time to beat him and he just might do so. For what its worth' I think the present Khan would give Mayweather a whole lot of trouble. -
3 to 4 months is fine' strain and Bottle and keep as long as you wish. A couple of tips I was given for the Alcohol soaked fruit is to have with Ice Cream as an Adult desert or when you Roast a Bird Duck/goose ect or Venision is to Mash the fruit into the pan juices of your roast to create a nice sauce. Heres a photo of Some damson Gin and Vodka I made a few years ago that was ready for Christmas that year. IT was a good year for damsons.A brace of mallard also for the Table.

THEY SAY A PICTURE SPEAKS A THOUSAND WORDS ...
SuperGoose75 replied to washwildfowler's topic in Wildfowling
Very Good..LOL..That explains then, why there are no Fowl to be Seen on the Horizon.. Apoligies for detracting from the Photo. I would agree with MM's comments' As good as Ive seen. One that the Owner would never tire of looking at if Enlarged/Framed and Hung on the Wall. -
I use a Fabarm Waterfowler for "Well" Wildfowling and Fabarm also do a long Barreled S/A with a36 inch tube which is called a Supergoose.

THEY SAY A PICTURE SPEAKS A THOUSAND WORDS ...
SuperGoose75 replied to washwildfowler's topic in Wildfowling
Now that is a superb Photo that captures Wildfolwing..!! The peace, quite and solitude of the Marsh. A Skein of geese or pack of Ducks in the Distance would really have been an added bonus to an already fine Photo. Just one Remark, The Fowler does look very American in appearance ' The S/A and baseball cap..Nothing wrong with that of course' Reminds me of the Roger Mc Phail BASC Centenary painting Showing how the Modern fowler has Evolved. http://www.fwi.co.uk/blogs/rural-life/2008/07/new-wildfowling-picture/ -
You seem to have done pretty Well this season, Considering you are pretty new to Coastal Wildfowling. Going by your reports, You seem to be keeping the right kind of Company. Well done on a good season.

I Wouldnt class myself as a Serious Rugby fan' however I have taken a Good bit of interest and have enjoyed watching the 6 Nations this past number of years. I like the respect that Rugby fans and players have for each other' respecting Anthems,Clapping the opponents off the field and the No nonsense approach by the referees, all the hype and banter that goes with game but at the end of the day it is all left on the field of play. We entertain the French tomorrow ' But I cant wait for the England game. It was an almighty tussle last year with England deserved victors on the day. I believe J.Sexton is lining out Tomorrow' although young Keatley stepped up and done well with the penalty kicks against Italy. I hope the big guns like Sexton and Healy will be fit for the England game. Lancaster got his troops well hyped up last year' the Walk in through the car park ect. They looked very impressive against the Welsh last week' but will need to be well up for it to come away with any points from the Aviva this time around. Looking Forward to watching the games over the Weekend

Last flight' of What yet again has been a Quite Season For Me due to Simply not getting the time to get out. I had planned to go to an estuary 20 miles away as after all the Snow and Hail' I knew that my local Marsh would be in full flood as I had a Flight there on Weds night and just managed to Wade out onto a Small patch of marsh that was exposed. It was an Horrendous night to be out,With driving squalls of Sleet and Hail and it was near impossible to look into the gloom for fear of losing an Eye. I seen a lot of Duck but only managed a couple of Shots and ended up with nothing in the bag. Back to this morning' as I opened the front door i was met with more hail. I started the motor and seen that the Fuel light was on' as Missy was last in the car and had failed to tell me.I was already running a bit late so decided to Scrap the 20mile drive as the roads where not great either. I knew I would have to flight from the shore line on the local inland brackish marsh so decided to throw 3 decoys in the bag and I0 mins later I was there. As expected the water was right up to the Sea Defence's So it was only a matter of Chucking out the 3 decoys as far as i could and settled down to wait.It was very cold with a strong onshore Wind. As Dawn broke the Greys and whoopers started flighting out to the fields getting tossed about in the Wind. No Duck appeared' but as is usual here they start to move about when it is light. The first Duck that came for a look' flighting into the wind was a Mallard' he came into range' but when i mounted the gun' I fiddled with the safety and he was a far bit away when i manged to get the shot off' but I hit him and the Wind carried him Well out before he hit the water. I had to be quick as the wind had changed slightly and the water was getting choppy and the duck was getting blown further away and as A "pump House" with about 10 foot of water at the gates would prevent me from crossing' i had to get the dog out quickly as he didnt see the bird go down.Luckily ' i got him out on a good line towards the bird and he was soon back with it. A few teal and wigeon Skirted the Decoys out of range and I was thinking about packing up' as we only can shoot one Hour before and after Dawn on this marsh' When a pair Mallard came wheeling into range' I missed with the first barrel but clipped the duck with the second. She flew a far bit before she went down' even further than the first bird and I wasnt so sure she was dead. I clambered my way down towards the pumphouse and sent the dog.He went well out and was not far from the bird which i know could see floating on the water.he couldnt see it due to the waves and he turned, despite my shouting go back he circled a bit before coming in. Nothing for it but to lay down the gun' and try and make my way around the safety Wire that fenced off around the pumphouse and deep water. When I got over the embankment and down onto the public path' I could see some early morning walkers arriving.I rushed up the path about 200 yrds,Before finding a likely place to climb back over the embankment and back down the otherside. When i did manage to fight my way through the brambles 'tearing at my waders and hands and get to the top off the embankment i was happy to see that I had judged it well and saw the duck about 30 yrds from the shore. so it was a simple enough retrieve in the end for the dog. So when I got back it was time to pack up and as i was doing so' a brace of mallard came nicely into Range but the gun was already in the slip. So there ends another season for me. The hail is driving down outside the window as I type this and an evening flight could possibly prove to be a Good one.But as I have other plans made 'that is me done and dusted for another Season. I will include a few photos of this morning. And note the 3 decoys' which without i would have not bagged anything.

Came across this in the middle of the night as I was caring for my father. A lovely little documentary on What appears to have been a very enigmatic lady. I liked the Animation throughout' and i reckon so would anyone that was on LSD,,,

I know alot of Guys who do it the other way around and import Cars from the UK' a lot of slightly damaged Vehicles are brought over' tidied up and sold and they make profit. Also a lot of people find it cheaper to buy in the North and pay the Duty. What is happening here' is that a lot of people are getting rid of bigger CC cars due to the horrendous Road tax prices and are going for smaller engines. The days of the big Diesel engines being cheaper to run are gone due to the Road tax and no difference in price of petrol/diesel at the pumps. So it may be possible to get a good deal on a bigger Vehicle. One positive of buying a used vehicle in Ireland is that the chassis should be pretty sound as We use Grit as opposed to salt in the winter months.

Hi Marshman' like yourself I have a few Birdwatching Friends and find time spent with them very interesting. You always seem to learn something new from them and its great when they let you look through their expensive Scopes. One Guy in particular' An English gentleman who is one of the most respected birders in Ireland is always a pleasure to spend time With' Although Sometimes i get the feeling he is fed up seeing me as i' usually spend so much time on the shore. They are so well clued up on all birds and seem to spot things that the casual eye doesnt. For example he told me to take a look at a ruff through the scope one day and he moved it several times as i said i couldnt see anything but godwits . It was only when I said that i was looking for the the puffed out neck feathers that he informed me that it was only in the breeding season that this occured. Like yourself' when i hang my Guns up "not for a good few yrs yet I hope" I will be purchasing a good Scope or one of them long lense cameras or both. I was trying to sell a gun to fund a good camera but I couldnt get the asking price. Ref- Bird Counting' when it comes to Wildfowl like geese' what you do is if you see a Skein of birds Count out say 20 and through time you will get to know What 20 geese in flight looks like and when you see big Skeins' you roughly count in 20's until Say' you get to 100 and when you familiarize what 100 looks like' you Start to Count in 100's and that is Roughly so to speak how to Count big numbers of birds. I suspect it is something Similar with geese on the Ground. Glad to hear you have been putting plenty of time in Anser2 and seemed have had a good season after your health problems.Long may it Continue .

Yes as fenboy has already mentioned, they did state that was the case in the documentary.I just found it horrific viewing watching them carry the Skeletal corpses and dumping them into the pits.Very grim.

I watched this disturbing Documentary last night and could hardly watch some of the images shown. I dont really have the words to describe what i was feeling.Upsetting would be one. I could only imagine' what the people/soldiers who first came across such sights must have felt and it is hard to imagine how anyone could ever get them images out of there heads and no doubt would be haunted by them for the rest of their lifes. The men carrying the Corpse's over there backs to the pits and then dropping them in like dolls was particularly disturbing to watch. I recall reading an article about a sibling of one of the nazi leaders who had her "Tubes Tied" so as not to have any children for fear of giving birth to a Child that may have evil traits such as the ones responsible for the horrific crimes that took place. I came across this piece through my readings. How odd of God to choose the Jews But not so odd as those who Choose The Jewish God,but not the Jews.

I wouldnt worry to much about seeing the eyes' if you can make out the black bars then you should be good to go. Islandgun has the right idea.If you can to get to the top of the mountain' then i wouldnt worry about Shot size. A well aimed snowball "Say Golf ball size" should do the job and if you pack a parachute and time it right you should be able to retrieve your bird on the way Down and land Safely. There is always ways and means of dealing with them Rangey birds.

Winchester rifle found in Navada desert
SuperGoose75 replied to B25Modelman's topic in Sporting Pictures
Cool Story. Reminds me of the movie Jeremiah Johnson when The mountain man came across the Dead and frozen Hatchet Jack' and the note that read whoever finds me can have my Rifle. -
I have watched a few Wildlife Documentaries over the yrs that included the Barheaded geese. Amazing Hardy creatures "like all Wildgeese" and goes to show what they have to endure to survive. I suppose that is partly why' we as Wildfowlers love and respect them so much.
-
I agree with Reabrook' When it comes to Wildfowling books' there is very little books of importance that I have not read' however a lot of them titles are pretty pricey also. My advice would be to buy a Good Bird book eg The field guide to the Birds of Britan or similar. And also to spend as much time on the Shore as you can " even in the off season" and familiarize yourself with birds of the Shoreline and use your book as reference. Also if/when you start Fowling' try and go out with someone with experience' as Birds in flight on wintry Dawns and Dusk will look only like dark Silhouette's and a reference book will be of little value as All Geese and ducks have different Wingbeats' and make different noises. Use your Senses' eyes and ears and try and take in as much as possible' Books are all well and good' but nothing will learn you more than time spent on the Shore. Good luck.

As a Western movie lover' i would not agree with that. Although High Noon' is a superb Film and it rightly won 4 Oscars ' If i was to name my top ten Westerns it would be in there but i would have a few of john Waynes films ahead of it. Of course that is my personal preference and I also respect yours.

I got the Helen B C' adaptation out on Dvd when it was released and although I enjoyed it' It was not a patch on the original. ref-John Mills,I seem to come across his Films more by chance' whilst flicking through the box he Starred in so many.To be honest the film you mention doesnt ring a bell with me but there is a good chance I have watched it. The long memory is one that stands out that I enjoyed.I also have seen a few oldies with his daughter Haley acting in them that I also enjoyed. I just like the man in a Film.

Believe me When I tell you that i am no Master with a goose call' and have probably Scared more geese with a goose call than i have brought into range with one. However I find the Greylag hammer very easy to use compared to the likes of the DJ call or Solway pink call when trying to get a greylag sound with very little effort.Of cousre the Solway pink call is a fine call for pinks and easy to use and was responsible for pulling a pair of pinks from flighting Whitefronts over a decade ago and enabled me to shoot my first ever pinkfoot "not a common Goose here". As you say the hammer sounds great' and if I' as a not very competent person with a call can use it with what I feel is very little effort' then I would Consider it user friendly. Fair play to anyman that can call geese without the aid of a Call.I have spent a lot of time goose chasing and goose watching and have been lucky enough to be close to large flocks of geese on the ground whilst feeding "under the moon" without them knowing i was there and hearing the strange buzzing noise they make whilst content and unaware of danger. But i neither have the confidence or ability to imitate any of the noise's that geese make. I can do a very good wigeon whistle but it lacks volume to be of any effect. I think Wigeon mans advice is the best' whatever call you decide to go for' use it sparingly and as an aid..it is not a magic flute and there has been lots of geese shot without the use of a call.
