Lampwick
None of them , they're a waste of time and money mate ! Cheers, but why? is it a bit of a marketing con? I was under the impression I would damage the gun if dry fired. I found this link to make your own, but if its a waste of time? http://www.reloadbench.com/snapcap.html
Dunkield
Cheers, but why? is it a bit of a marketing con? I was under the impression I would damage the gun if dry fired. Unless you are giving it a quick test after stripping it down, why else would you dry fire it?

Dekers
Any ideas which snap caps I should buy for my 12 bore? Brass? alloy? plastic? Cheers If you run a semi you don't need them anyway...I have been through a few over the tears and the worst by far were the most expensive, stainless steel! I still use them (PLASTIC) in my O/U but remain unconvinced of their worth in these days of "quality" metal gun parts..... Just get the cheapest plastic ones you can find, that way you stand the least chance of damaging your gun with them and hardly damaging your pocket either!! bagpuss
Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but aren't snap caps used to take the tension off the firing spring before the gun is stored in the gun cupboard??
Dekers
Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but aren't snap caps used to take the tension off the firing spring before the gun is stored in the gun cupboard?? Yep...and you can do that with a semi without snap caps, and when you leave them in anything else, you compress the firing pin spring slightly anyway, so this can have an adverse effect of the firing pin pressure in the long term...all a bit of a trade off, and why I think their use in MODERN shotguns is debateable!! Sinistercr0c
The instruction manual supplied with my Beretta SP3 specifically states that when the gun is stored, snap caps should be used to release the tension of the firing pin springs, then the fore-end removed prior to breaking the gun to remove the snap caps (in order that the springs are not reset by the fore-end mechanism I presume). Are we saying that one of the the biggest manufacturers of shotguns worldwide is talking billy ballsacks? I am now retreating the required 10 yards after lighting the blue touch paper..... Not a problem at all if you take down your shotgun, the problem is, if you don't...as most dont!!
Billy.
Excuse my ignorance on the subject, but aren't snap caps used to take the tension off the firing spring before the gun is stored in the gun cupboard?? Yeah, just like you lift your car off it's suspension every night to release the tension in the springs... If you own a very old gun, fair enough, but they create guns so that they will not break under normal operating conditions. Leaving them in the cabinet for years will not harm the springs. The action of putting a snap cap in a gun, in your house is dangerous and has caused damage in the past, as believe it or not, it is possible to get mixed up between a snap cap and a live cartridge and blow a hole in your ceiling.. Cat, I'm amazed you've kept your nerve answering three of these in a week...!
Catamong
Yes, they're testing my patience, believe me, and of course gun manufacturers recommend snap caps, 'cos they're in the market to sell all those gullible newbies a lovely set of brass ones at £29.99..!! Must dash now, I've got to jack up the car to take the pressure off those springs in the shockers. Cat.
bagpuss
£29.99!!! There are brass Bisley snap caps on e-bay for under a tenner. Here is a thought for those that want to use snap caps, why not leave the snap caps in the gun after you have released the firing pin spring tension & remove the snap caps next time you go out with the gun. PS I'm not a gullible newbie I've been shooting for 30 years Edited February 13, 2010 by bagpuss
Sinistercr0c
Yeah, and stop buying all those other products you use to maintain your gun....you know those newbie things like oil, cleaning rods, jags, legia spray etc. cos lets face it, guns don't actually need any form of upkeep really, its all just needless expense.... I'm off to drain the oil out of me car now cos it obviously don't need it...I'm just keeping BP, Shell and Exxon in shekels, stupid me....... berties
how many people answer theese threads are gun smiths?i took a gun to a amazing gun smith in Ringwood who always gives you the low down on your gun and some may say well hes looking for work, but he asked and made sure I was using snap caps I laughed and mentioned the heated debates that start on p/w and he went mad going into the techy side of the sears etc showing us a trigger mech,so i still sit on the fence ,throw them in the bin if you want I have some nice shiney brass ones that cost £10 if people feel its a lot of money then a shooting aint cheap and take up Knitting,i take the advice of a expert and not a random forum
