kyska
I've done a search and unless I'm being more tarded than usual I can't find an answer. What do people do with empty shotgun and rimfire cartridges/cases?

kyska
Do they actually get recycled in the recycle bin... I'm not a great tree hugger, but it seems an awful waste, unless the plastic used is pre-recycled.

MC
What brass? You would need a fair few cartridge cases before you got enough for a beer. I took 80kilos of .22 cases into a scrappy recently and got £45. They are actually brass unlike shotgun cartridges which are only electro plated steel. MC
you were had in a big way there MC brass is over £2000 a ton at the moment You try getting £2000 a ton out of a scrapyard, especially with bullet cases which are classed as hazardous and there is only one scrap metal merchant in our area who will take them. No idea to be honest, They came from my local rifle club, we get through about 30,000 rounds a year and there was a little over a years worth. So probably about 35,000 cases. Imperfection
Do they actually get recycled in the recycle bin... Might not be a good idea.Few years ago,the recycling plant where our stuff goes was closed down because an operative there saw 'live ammunition' and everything came to a standstill.Turned out to be spent shotgun cartridges so no risk to anyone, but i guess someone there fancied the morning off work! Vince Green
Unfortunately you got ripped off mate! at the minute brassery is going for at least £2.50 a kilo They always give you less for cartridge cases because they are supposed to sort it by hand for live rounds. Or so they tell me. Our local scrapyard give you about half the brass price. Edited September 22, 2010 by Vince Green

Vince Green
recyling bin... I don't think the council would recyle them because they don't usually get brass in the recycling. I had a visit to our local recycling depot about two years back. All the stuff goes on a long slow moving conveyor and anything thats wanted, cans bottles cardboard etc gets lifted off by the operators. Whatever is not taken off goes into the ordinary rubbish at the end.
MC
Unfortunately you got ripped off mate! at the minute brassery is going for at least £2.50 a kilo You will never get market value on scrap, If you can get £2.50 a kilo I will sell the next lot to you for £1.50 and you can make a profit on them. Yes brass may well be £2500 a tonne on the metals market but you will never get that at a scrap yard, you would be lucky to get half. I made a mistake in my post anyway as I have just found the receipt. it was 45 kilos of shells and we got £31.00 for it. How you can be ripped off for getting money for something that has no use to you at all is beyond me.
