southeastpete
i was given a bag of shells by a friends dad. In it were 60 odd saga 32g 6's, 16 hull three crowns bb loads, and 4 acetrace rounds. The interesting thing was that there were about 20 'reloaded' shells with dried rice in! Probably thought he'd use them if someome broke in some day lol. Mental. I just cut them all apart some were ancient. Also a couple .357 magnum shell cases, and 3 bullet heads. 60 free pigeon shells and 16 bb's for free is a nicd bargain, but the rest was a bit of a surprise! Cranfield
I have known people load cartridges with dried rice for shooting rats and feathered prey in barns. The idea being to eliminate structural damage. I have no idea how effective they would be.
HDAV
I thought they were chasing scrumping kids out of your orchards!
Vince Green
Rice cartridges were used by the military for riot control. But most were used for rats etc
TJ91
have used them with barley in for feral pigeons in the grainstores no damage to the fragile roofs and just knocks the birds out, ring ther neck as soon as they come down to make sure use .177 now, much easier! The Duncan
LMAO - imagining pigeons being shot at range with rice, flying off with an annoyed look on their faces
anser2
I assume you do not have a Firearms Certifcate so get rid of the bullets quick. hand them in or return to the guy who gave them to you. If the police find you with them and no FAC you could lose your shotgun certifcate. As for the other shells as long as they have been kept dry they should be fine. southeastpete
anser2, is that true even if they are not complete, live bullets. Just 2 fried, empty shells, and 3 bullet ends? Because i also have a bunch of 5.56, 7.62 & .50 bullets i dug out of a sand trap sat on my shelf...

AFAIK so long as it is normal lead or FMJ bullets it is not a problem, however if it is expanding ammunition then you need a FAC and a condition on said FAC to hold them. Expanding ammunition has to be held on a FAC (the bullet as well if Given that you are talking about ammunition by its nato designation rather than their civilian designations I assume these bullets came from a Military range so should be standard ball ( Expanding ammo being contary to the Geneva Convention.) In all other cases AFAIK all four major component parts (Case, Bullet, Primer and Propellant)need to be present for "it" to be cosidered a round of amunition in law. Hence bullets (non expanding) used cartridge cases, reformed (bullet refitted to fired case and even bullets that have been drilled and the propellant removed are legal. If you where serving when you removed the bullets from a military range you may have comitted a military offence ? but there is nothing wrong with you posessing the bullets as a Civvie! southeastpete
the declaration at the end of ranges refers to live rounds or empty cases, not spent bullets. It'll be fine then lobbing these on the shelf then i think. Cheers guys
Zapp
the declaration at the end of ranges refers to live rounds or empty cases, not spent bullets. It'll be fine then lobbing these on the shelf then i think. Cheers guys Unless it has changed since I was in, it is "live/blank rounds, empty cases, pyrotechnics or parts thereof". If the "parts thereof" refers to the live rounds aswell as the pyrotechnics (I dont know whether or not it does) then you could still be on dodgy ground. southeastpete
im pretty sure it does, because they only mentioned the parts thereof when we used pyros, not if we just did a day with the rifles zeroing or something... Hunter_zero
You need an FAC to hold expanding ammunition and you can only hold expanding ammunition for the calibres stated on your FAC. You DO NOT need an FAC to hold FMJ bullets. You do have to present your FAC when buying primers. YOU DO NOT need and FAC to hold cases. There is some confusion over "primed cases" being classed as ammunition, however no FAC is needed for blanks (odd, as blanks have primers). I honestly don't think you have a lot to worry about. welshwarrior
You can't leave a MOD range with live round blank round empty cases pyrothetnics or parts of any of the above. which is cut down to or parts there of. This includes the nice waterproof bags that you note book fits in for blank rounds, 81mm greenies that turn into big cups or ammo tins!!!!!!!!!
