Gordon R
You can defer it once, but your occupation will not exempt you.

Evil Elvis
I spoke to someone about deferring, you have to give alternate dates for THIS year
Catweazle
I did it in January. It wasn't too bad, I got to catch up on my reading and had a few days off too. At the end of the day it's just part of the price we pay for our legal system, a small national service.
apache
If you turn up in a Nazi uniform or Ku Klux Clan outfit they'll send you home! Seriously, come out with a few extream comments and they'll send you home.
CZ550Kevlar
I have done it twice in 2 years, first time was deferred for a few months then literally 2 years after i had a letter from HM court services drop through the door which made me think oh pooh i`m in trouble, nope jury service AGAIN! You can only defer and jobs don`t get you out of it, i only got mine deferred for abit until later in the year due to my job but they don`t like doing it. MM
I think serving military staff can avoid it, but thats the only job.

stubby
I did it a few years back was quite interesting, but the thing that ****** me off, was being employed you only get a set amount plus travel expensise, but self employed people on the same jury, could and was claiming back upto 6 times the amount I was getting
kdubya
I did it in 2007 thoroughly enjoyed it, was picked for a couple of cases, one a fraud case were the parties ( the male partner had already been sent down) and the female party ( trial I was involved in) eventually got off as the cops who presented the case were torn to shreds and made to look incompetant and shoddy, fascinating to see and hear how they go about it, one cop said he had lost his "notes" judge said I take that as you having never taken any? woman was a guilty as sin but the judge ordered that she be found not guilty due to lack of evidence, other case was street robbery, I got the job of ushering the imortal words, ie, we have, guilty!! cheers KW

Willxx
just write back saying that you fully support and uphold the law and lawmakers so any case that has got as far as a jury trial will be given your "absolute approval" and the police can rely on getting the "right result" from you - that will probably do it
Dunkield
Yes twice. If you 'get out of it' your name is entered back into the list so there is every chance you will get called up again. What is your objection to doing it?
Bleeh
You are allowed not to go, but from this point onwards you are never, ever allowed to comment on one of those 'stupid ruling' topics (often linked from the Daily fail Mail website). The problem is far to many people look at the whole Jury duty thing the same way they look at giving blood or voting. They all agree it's something that right and should be done, but when push comes to shove far to many moan about spending a few days (in there otherwise ''packed'' lives) helping someone else for a change. Mungler
Have a looky here: http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/courtfinder/forms/js_guidance_0709.pdf This isn't advice, but I understand that if you can evidence that you are involved in some crack pot non main stream religious order and suggest that you are not able to Judge man, and that only God can do that - then it's job jobbed If you can go further and suggest that you are a minister of religion (see below) then it's a slam dunk. There are plenty of on line Churches that anyone can legitimately join and become a Minister of for the payment of a small fee whereafter the applicant is provided with a nice certificate. EDIT: I wouldn't mind doing it if I could be assured of a short 2 weeker and could book it myself to co-incide with work. Imagine turning up and getting dumped on the modern equivalent of the Maxwell Fraud trial (which ran for well over 1 year). Mind you, if I was employed that would sound like an interesting break from work, but being self employed that would sound like financial ruin... MC
I must be the only person on the planet who actually wants to do this, I can't see what the issue is. Although my opinion that you wouldn't be in court if you weren't guilty might have something to do with why I have never been picked. Just get a tee shirt with a set of gallows on it and the slogan "Let 'em swing" I am sure they won't ask you back after the first day. daz2202
I always wanted to get the call to do jury service, but it never came. 2008 I jacked in my well paid employed job working for a national company, and started my own business only 80 yards down the road to give them a bit of direct competition, 8 weeks after opening i got the letter. I attended on the start day and explained my dilemma and that it could ruin my business before it had really started. They sent me off and just said that i would get put back in the hat and may get called another day. Honest facts and politeness got me off this one

Batch
I really enjoyed the whole process when I got called, but then again I was lucky (if you can call it that) to have been on the jury for a murder trial, which lasted 7 of the 10 working days. At the end of the summing up the judge told us that we could take the remaining 3 days as leave of absence from work, which they took care of, due to the nature of the case!! Now exempt from ever having to do jury service again But was interesting to see how the whole process worked, apart from when points of law were raised by the barristers and we got sent out, that was when all the arguing between the barristers really kicked off and we never got to witness it, shame really!
