Nets - which is best?

Recommended Posts

I currently use a 'stealth' type net - I think it is the Jack Pyke version. 4m * 1.5m.

Most of the time I think this works well and it makes a good size hide for 1 person. When I need a bigger hide I use another net that is different (more conventional scrim type net) but seems to do the job.

When the sun shines onto me from in front the net is far less effective - it is simply too light and I have use my other net and double up.

Has anybody got experience of using the Deben APG or AT nets? I'm thinking of getting the largest one they do - 5 or 6m * 1.5m. Should cater for a bigger hide suitable for 2 or a hide for 1 but when I need a fourth side (back).

I have three; a Jack Pyke Clearview, a Stealth Net and a conventional military style net. The Jack Pyke one is hopeless as a screen. It is just a curtain mesh dyed in realtree patterns. I use it as a roof over a hide or as a cloak style throw over if I'm air gunning from a sitting position. The Stealth Net is better, but is no good unless you have a solid hedge as a back drop or they can see straight through. The military type is the most opaque and unforuntely alo the heaviest and most bulky by far.

Usually I put the Stealth net over the military net as a belt and braces measure.

Have had three now;

1st was a clearview, totaly useless in every way

2nd was a stealth, good on dull days, but was bulky and heavy,at 4m long it was a good size

3rd and the one i use now,the jack pyke 3d leaf cut,but could do with it being longer than the 3m,its light does not get affected by the wind to much, folds to nothing and is light and reversible, from half way into the field you would be hard to spot it and if wearing camo cannot be seen inside it :good:

What ever you get,it will be see through :o

You could always use a camo tarpaulin behind the net good to stop it being see through and can be used as a roof in rain and under a tenner :good:

ATB figgy

I do that too sometimes. I use a camo' poncho though. It doubles as a small tent, shelter from wind and rain and can be draped over the dog and me when sitting out for squirrels or corvids in the woods.

I've got a few nets, but the one I use most is the Camoreal. It suits my every need, and is lightweight. Mine is getting old now, with some rips etc through it, and I intend to buy some more soon.

For many years, I used the old style army camo net, and this is still good, although it is a bit on the heavy side.

This is my personal opinion:-

All a net needs to do , is to break up your silhouette.

It matters not if its see through, if your wearing suitable clothing. e.g. cammo gear or country green etc, and movement behind it is kept to an absolute minimum.

Any flashes of bear skin or movement from the hide will alert the birds (pigeon or crows)and cause them to flare away.

So, cover up any exposed skin above the net, keep alert and keep still, especially once the bird has been spotted.

A flash of bare skin in the distance in a field , looks like a big spotlight.

Obviously, if you do have a good backdrop , you can move a bit more freely behind the net, between bird spottings. But still remember the rules.

Oh and by the way I use a stealth net for everything, crows and pigeons. Its lightweight and I've used it 30mph winds.Just make sure its set up ok. Don't know if its the best, but it is really good for me.

Basically they all work , if your fieldcraft is ok.

I really don't think pigeons can spot you as easily as people make out. I look for pigeons over the hide and can spot pigeons before they spot me.

saying that at the moment find them not all that sharp as have shot a few when just in the field

as norm from say 100yards they will spot and fly way off you

Been using a stealth net for years with great success. As its not all one colour, it blends in against hedgerows etc pretty well, all year round :good:

Sometimes I use a cheap net, green one side brown the other, as a backdrop if the cover is too thin behind.

For wet/rainy days the fishing brolly comes out and the cheap net gets thrown over the top, and the stealth net goes around the front as normal

I made a good hide yesterday with two stealth nets ( different colours) and a clearview net. It was a box type hide and was put out in the open in a nearly bare rape field. It didn't really blend in and anyone passing by would have said it stood out like a sore thumb. It worked a treat, though.
