Keep two pigeons from the previous outing and use those. They'll last for years in the freezer.
Cosd
If the wind is too strong then the hyprflaps don work.
The Essex Hunter
If the wind is too strong then the hyprflaps don work. It is a shame when people recommend hyper-flaps on here, they dont mention that they fold up in a strong wind. I use shell and full-bodied ground decoys then add what I shoot to the pattern. However, dead birds on the rotary because they are the closest thing to the quarry we are after! chrispti
I have 2 cheap plastic flying decoys, which I have glued some real pigeon wings onto the plastic wings and also glued the tail feathers on. It works

I still think they are an excellent decoy for the magnet and bouncers alike. Unfortunately if the wind is strong enough it's not just Hypers that won't work! mossy835
i had two of them, never had luck with them at all. they are a lot of money best use real ones.
sitsinhedges
I'm still convinced that magnets spook pigeons as often as they pull them in regardless of what's on the arms. The only time I seem to get success with them is on swathed rape where they are about the only thing that gets above it, and the pigeons tend to be young and naive at that time of year. kdubya
hypas are GOOD but they are intended to create movement which in turn attracts pigeon? I use them always in lightish winds, in strong wind the means of creating movement is there but in a different way IE the rotary is in and the bouncers are out. oh and you can always slow the rotary down a bit KW Edited April 3, 2011 by kdubya
Blunderbuss
If you put two of the carbon rods in the wings, then hypaflaps work a lot better in strongish winds. I also find it helps if you shorten the nylon line that holds the bottom of the wings together, as it stops the wings flipping over and wrapping round the rods. I agree,i've used them in strong winds, but when i think it's too windy then i put them on floaters
Greenhunter
I've adapted my rotary arms to take two of my Nemesis floaters. They stay on all the time and work well. I've also slowed the spin rate down to a more realistic speed. GH
Mightymariner
Either a couple from the freezer or I wait till I have shot two. I have some foam decoys but think they scare more than they attract.
UKPoacher
I use Hyperflaps or Flying Pigeon decoys on the rotary dependent on wind speed. The Hypers work better in low wind on the magnet and high wind on floaters, whereas the Flying Pigeons are better on the magnet in higher winds but useless on floaters in anything stronger than a breeze as they twist over. Looking at this from another angle, for general dcoying over crops I personally don't put the magnet out until I've established that there is a good flight line, which in turn usually means that I get to shoot a pigeon or two before going to the hassle of setting up the magnet. There is no point wasting time setting up a magnet if there is nothing in the air in my opinion. Just throw a few deeks out and watch the sky for movement. I'll put the first two dead birds on low level bouncers or angels where I want incoming pigeons to aim for and then put the next three or four on longer bouncers at the rear of the pattern around 30 - 50 yds back. The magnet with artifical pigeons is the last thing to be set up and only when birds are flying over without committing to the pattern or deviating towards it. The magnet is there just to attract attention. It is the birds on the ground that I need to be realistic.
Mike525steel
I have a couple of foam pigeons that I have put some real wings on with some wire They work pretty well
Labrador 99
I made my own from a cheap foam karrimat & car spray primer. The pattern was in Sporting Shooter magazine a few years back!
deny essex
I use hypas and have a purpose homemade lightweight rotary for them, light winds they are fine and do work like anything else on the right day , strong winds put them on a floater. I agree with UKpoacher, I dont put my magnet out until the birds seem shy to decoy and i am convinced my pattern is correct. I have had some good shooting with hypas where the birds have bombed them and days when they seem to spook them off. Its all about reading the way the birds react on the day and useing what kit and knowledge you have as best you can, even then there are days when they just pass by sticking a middle wing feather up at you outta range.
